It was Aaron's birthday and Emily was as excited as can be. She had spent all day baking him a cake and was just now able to sit down. "Mmmm, smells good." Aaron said, pulling Emily closer to him. "What, me or the cake?" She replied with a smile. "Both." Aaron shot back, squeezing her. Emily giggled and they began to kiss. As if on cue, every smoke detector in the apartment went off.

Emily jumped up and ran into the kitchen. Thick black smoke was curling out of the oven. Aaron shoved her out of the way, opened the oven and sprayed it with the fire extinguisher. "How long did you have it in there!" He yelled over the cacophony of the alarms. He turned and found Emily sitting cross-legged on the ground, crying. Aaron picked her up and carried her out to the living room. She buried her face into his chest and cried harder. He tried hard not to laugh but it was impossible, so he hid it from her as best as he could. "Emily, Honey," He began.

"I'm so sorry Aaron, I just, I dunno what happened. I spent all day on it and and I guess I lost track of time. I'm so sorry." Emily rambled on, wiping her eyes with the palm of her hand. "Shh, it's okay. It's fine." Aaron interjected while she took a hiccupy breath. After a few moments the crying died down, but the smoke alarms didn't. Aaron left Emily on the couch as he went around turning the alarms off.

Just then the fire department broke through the door. Emily screamed, and so did one of the firefighters. Aaron ran into the room. "Downstairs neighbor said there was a fire?" one of the firefighters asked. "Her cake caught on fire; I took care of it." Aaron explained. The firefighters laughed, and Emily started crying again. "Aw, don't cry sweetie, this isn't the first cake fire we've been called out to." A firefighter piped up from the back. "Now the cornbread one, that was hilarious." Another chimed in.

Aaron and the firefighters had a good laugh, much at the expense of Emily; but the rest of the day went on smoothly.
