It took a few moments for Spencer Reid to realize that his phone was ringing; it was his cell phone, not the land line in his apartment, and he almost didn't want to pick it up. It was probably Hotch calling to tell him that they had a case, and that any weekend plans were over.

He looked at the number, his eyes widening when he realized who it was. This was a call that he had long since given up waiting for, a call that he'd thought he might never receive. It was one that he had wanted to get for so long, but that he knew the futility of hoping for.

When he answered, his voice was breathless; he couldn't hold back the excitement that was rising within him. "Hello?" His voice cracked like a teenager's; why was he so impossibly excited by a call that might very well not even be good news for him?

"Doctor Reid?" The voice on the other end of the line was familiar; it was a therapist who he'd spoken to more often than he liked to admit. He hadn't thought that he would hear her voice again for a very long time, if ever. "I thought you should know. He's come out of it."

"What?" Spencer's breath caught in his throat; for just a moment, time seemed to stand still. He was unable to speak, unable to move; his thoughts were in a whirlwind, his emotions all over the map. He didn't know what to say, what to feel, what to think.

"Adam has come out of the dissociative state," the therapist told him, her voice holding more than a hint of excitement. "I don't know how long he'll stay out of it -- but the last thing Amanda said was that she was going for good. That Adam could get through life on his own."

Spencer frowned, something about the words sounding false to him. "Amanda said that? It's not like her. She was always so set on keeping Adam under her control, on being the dominant personality. She's not going to just give in all of a sudden."

"I don't know what made her leave," the therapist told him, a slight edge to her voice now. "She just said that she was leaving, that he was on his own. That he was fighting too hard to get out and that he didn't deserve her protection any longer. And then .... Adam was there."

Spencer nodded before he realized that he was on the phone, and that the affirmative action couldn't be seen. "I can be there by tomorrow morning," he managed to say, almost feeling that his throat was closing on the words. "I need to talk to him. To find out if he's all right."

"He seems to be," the therapist told him, sighing. "But he's asking for you, Doctor Reid. Over and over again. He wants to know where you are, and when he can see you. I think he needs you more than he needs anyone else. He's reaching out to you."

"He's scared and confused," Spencer said softly, his heart aching for the young man who had more than likely awakened to find himself in a place that he knew nothing about, a virtual prisoner, surrounded by strangers. "He needs to be around a familiar face."

"We'll release him to you, if you think it's a good idea," the woman on the other end of the line told him, her voice becoming brisk. "We might want to watch him for another few days, but now that he's out of the state he was in, there's no reason for us to keep him here much longer."

"What? You're not going to keep him under observation?" Spencer was startled by the woman's words; he hadn't expected them to let Adam go so easily. After all, to them, the young man was a killer, even if he hadn't known what his other personality was doing at the time.

"If he's with you, then he'll be considered much less of a risk." The voice on the line was almost annoyed, as though she didn't want to try to handle the problem she'd been given. Spencer didn't blame the woman; she was more than likely overworked and understaffed.

"I'll take responsibility for him," Spencer said softly, feeling his heart seem to leap from his chest into his throat. He hadn't thought that anything like this would happen; he hadn't expected to have Adam turned over to him without some kind of struggle.

But it was happening -- and now that it was, he wasn't sure that he was ready to deal with the situation. He'd dreamed about this, waited for it, wanted it -- but he'd never thought that it would happen. He hadn't thought that Amanda would simply leave.

When Adam's alter personality had first taken over, Spencer had thought that he could make he go away, make her give Adam back his life, But it hadn't been as easy as he'd thought it would be; Amanda had been persistent. It had been two long years since Adam had been free.

Now that he was, would she stay gone? Would the young man finally have a chance to free himself from the demons that had snapped at his heels for his entire life? With Amanda gone, Adam finally had a chance -- but only if that alter personality had disappeared for good.

"Doctor Reid?" The woman sounded a little snappish now; it took Spencer a moment to bring himself back to the reality of the phone call. "So you'll be here to pick him up in the morning, then? I'll prepare the paperwork to release him to you."

"I'll be there," he managed to say, his heart thumping in his chest. He heard the click on the other end of the line after the therapist said goodbye, and slowly clicked his phone off, feeling as if he was in some sort of surreal dream that he didn't quite understand.

This was all happening so fast. One day, he'd been sure that Adam was lost forever, that Amanda would never let him go -- and now, it seemed that Adam was out of the clutches of his alter personality and would be his responsibility, something that he wasn't sure he could handle.

But who else was there? If they were determined to let Adam have a life of his own out of the hospital, then he had to have somewhere to go -- and there was no one else who would take him in. He wasn't going to let the young man try to cope with life on his own.

Adam wouldn't be able to do that -- and Amanda might take over again. Spencer was sure that if Adam were to disappear into the mists of his mind and let that alter personality take over again, he would be gone for good this time. Nothing would ever be able to bring him back.

He wasn't going to let that happen. Adam had come to mean too much to him; he couldn't say why, but the young man represented a victory that Spencer wanted desperately to win. And there was something else as well, something that lurked around the edges of his thoughts.

He cared about Adam deeply. In the brief time that they'd known each other when Adam had still been himself, there had been a bond formed between them that Spencer could still feel tugging at him. He felt responsible for helping Adam, for guiding him back into the world.

Was he taking on too much? The team would think that he was; everyone he knew would assume that he had lost his mind, or that he was biting off more than he could chew and would eventually have to give up on what he planned to do. They'd never believe it was possible.

But it was, Spencer told himself firmly. It had to be. He couldn't let Adam go out there on his own, where someone could push him too far and bring Amanda out again. He couldn't take the chance that he would lose the young man for good if that happened.

Somehow, he would bring Adam here and keep him safe. He would make sure that he saw a therapist, and he would help Adam integrate himself back into the ebb and flow of life. It wasn't impossible. Adam just needed someone to help him. Someone to care about him.

He was going to give Adam that chance. He didn't care what other people might say; Adam deserved this, and Spencer was going to make sure that he had every opportunity of getting on with his life. It was the least he could do for someone in need.

Was he taking on an impossible task, biting off more than he could chew? Spencer shook his head, closing his eyes for a moment and taking a deep breath. No. He wasn't. He couldn't let himself think that way, or this was doomed before it even started.

He'd never wanted to save anyone as much as he wanted to save Adam. Maybe others would think it was impossible, but he wasn't going to fall into that way of looking at the situation. He had to believe that nothing was impossible. He had to. For Adam's sake.

Tomorrow morning, he would be at the mental hospital. And within another day or so, he'd bring Adam back here. He could do this. He had to do this. Maybe, in some ways, he was healing himself as much as Adam -- and it was just possible that he was the one who needed that healing the most.
