Going to work on a case was always bittersweet for him.

Spencer settled back into the pillows of his hotel room bed, closing his eyes and wishing that he was back in Vegas, in bed with Greg, instead of here in Seattle.

This was his job, he reminded himself. This was what he did for a living, and he enjoyed it. He was good at it, and when he and Greg had talked just a couple of days ago, they had come to the conclusion that neither of them wanted to leave their jobs, even to be together more.

They'd managed to make their relationship work so far, and they would keep doing it. Long-distance romances weren't easy, but so far, they were doing okay.

He just wished that he could be with his boyfriend more.

Especially now, when Greg really needed him, Spencer thought with a frown. Foyet still hadn't been caught, and he didn't feel right leaving Greg alone so often.

They both had to deal with a lot of lonely nights because neither of them wanted to give up what they did for a living. Spencer didn't know how to alleviate that; he'd thought about it long and hard, but the only answer he could come up with was one that didn't work for either of them.

Their jobs defined who they were. Greg loved being a CSI, and he loved working with the BAU. They couldn't simply turn their backs on their careers.

Sometimes he wished they could; it would make life a lot easier for both of them, and they wouldn't have to be apart so much. But it wouldn't work for them.

If one, or even both, of them left these jobs, then they would eventually end up resenting each other for making that happen. He was sure of it. And the last thing he wanted for himself and Greg was for them to lose each other, especially when they didn't have to.

As hard as it was for them to deal with all the time they had to spend apart, they still had each other. And really, each homecoming was better than the one before.

Their life together was bittersweet, but he wouldn't give it up.

Spencer didn't know how long they could continue like this, how long things would keep working out before they both needed and wanted more than they had.

But for the moment, things were working, so he shouldn't worry about it, he told himself with a soft sigh. Though at some point, they would have to talk this over again, and they would probably have to make some hard decisions along the way. He would have to be prepared for that eventuality.

Whatever happened, he wasn't going to give Greg up, he told himself as he turned on his side and closed his eyes. They had been through too much to let each other go.

With that thought in his mind, he drifted off into an uneasy slumber.
