It's really hard, some days.

Some days he can wake up, and go to work, and deal with the victims, and the unsubs, and the fact that he can read them because he thinks like them.

Other days, like today, after an incredibility traumatic case, he remembers the pleasant blur that he felt with the drugs that Tobias put in him, and he feels the temptation to fall, again, into that hazy darkness that envelops me so, like he's a baby tucked in the crook of his mother's arm. Warm, soft, and oh so sweet.

Some days he really have to remind himself that the pain doesn't go away, but rather, the drugs cover it up like a wedding veil covering the coy smile of a virgin bride.

Some days, that's not a bad thing.

"Reid. Hey, Reid!"

A gentle tap on his angular shoulder startled him, and he turned frantically, his longish brown hair messily whipping across his forehead.

Big blue eyes, so blue it was almost impossible, stared back at him, filled with concern.

"Spence," JJ said. "Are you alright? I've been calling your name from down the hallway." She cocked her head slightly to the left, eyebrows raised. "Did you not hear me?"

Reid gave her a genuinely happy smile, albeit a small and tired looking one. "Sorry, my head was in the clouds." He shook his head, taking off his glasses to wipe them on his beige sweater. "Today was…"

"Long," JJ finished. "Long, and tiring, and painful." She shook her head, mimicking him absentmindedly. "At least we found the murderer. At least, that."

"For the children," he agreed. "At least now the kids of Santa Fe can rest easy now that that son of a bitch is in jail." His voice grew bitter at the end, but noticing her concern grow in her blue eyes, the windows to her soul, he smiled again, reassuring her.

"Right, I'm going off to type my report." He raised his eyebrows at her and she nodded tiredly.

"Same."

"Right, well, I'll see you later," she offered tentatively. She looked around at the empty hallway – this late at night, it was usually just the BAU team in the office, and all of them were in the bullpen. She tiptoed gingerly and gently placed a kiss on his cheek. Her hand grazed over his slightly, and then she was off. Reid watched her leave, hands tucked in his khakis pocket. Then, with a lopsided grin, he walked towards the bullpen, ready to go against his monsters again.

Some days, the drugs pulled him in, and called to him.

But every day, she brings him out of the shadow, and into the person that he should be.
