Then:

Spencer Reid had met Derek Morgan through a case the BAU were handling. Spencer's neighbour had been abducted and Derek Morgan and Emily Prentiss had been nominated to go door to door to see if anyone had heard anything significant. The first time he laid eyes on the tall handsome agent, Spencer knew he would always wonder what could have been if he wasn't deaf. If his life had gone the way it should have gone. Perhaps he would have gotten the dream job he had always wanted and maybe even have been working with this man. It also led him to wonder if that might have been just tempting him with something he may never have. Not to say his life was bad, but he just knew something was missing.

At first Derek was surprised when Spencer pointed to his ears and signed that he is deaf. Then his expression turned even more comical when he realised that Emily Prentiss knew sign language and was standing beside him signing away to the tall thin man. Derek couldn't help watching the way Spencer Reid's fingers moved; how animated and agile they were. He supposed that came from being used to communicate constantly with the outside world. A thought flitted through his brain of how those fingers might feel brushing his face, holding his hand. He shook his head and was surprised at his own thoughts and tried to bring himself back to the present and listen as Emily relayed what Spencer had told her. As he looked at Spencer's earnest open expression, he suddenly wished he knew sign language. He handed Spencer his card with his mobile number on it and told him to text him  if he remembered anything else. He tried to keep calm when Spencer's fingers brushed his as he took the card and held onto it just a fraction of a second longer, wanting to prolong the moment for as long as possible.

Now:

Looking back at it now, it seemed so long ago, the innocent beginning of their relationship. Spencer could never be thankful enough that he had worked up the courage to contact Derek. He had been terrified that Derek wouldn't remember him; after all he had left it just over a month before contacting him. But then when he met him and Derek had hesitantly signed hello to him, Spencer knew he had done the right thing. They had gone from strength to strength since. They were practically inseparable: Spencer living in his silent world and sharing it alongside Derek. Now it was two very happy years later; they were living together and both their worlds were about to change drastically again. It has been three weeks since Spencer's cochlear ear implant operation. The odds were 50/50 to it working, but they had decided to take the chance. Right now, Spencer was waiting for the Doctor to acitivate the implant. Spencer wants nothing more than to hear Derek's voice: the one that seems to melt everyone he talked to: that seems to entrance people.

As it is activated, he looks to the doctor who is speaking to him. He hears noise but it is meaningless as of yet. Spencer knows he will have to have therapy and give his brain time to begin to process sound before he can distinguish between different sounds. However, he turns to Derek and sees him begin to talk. He sounds radically different to the doctor. where the doctor sounded high pitched and grating, Derek's voice sounds smooth and velvety. He sees Derek's lips form the words Pretty Boy and lets his dulcet tone flow over him and instantly knows that he will love listening to Derek's voice for the rest of his life.
