This was a bad idea. Very bad.

Greg could feel his muscles tightening along with his nerves, apprehension tingling through his body. He didn't doubt that his nerves would be stretched to the breaking point if this went on much longer. He didn't think he could keep sitting here and doing nothing.

He glanced over at Jim Brass, who didn't seem to be tense at all. The older man had tried talking to him, but Greg hadn't been in the mood for conversation; his replies to Jim had been terse and clipped, and they had eventually lapsed into silence.

He hated knowing that Ryan was putting himself into danger to keep him safe. He had tried to argue with his boyfriend, to turn him away from this course of action, but Ryan had been adamant. And in the end, Greg felt that he'd had no choice but to acquiesce.

But that didn't mean he liked this situation, he told himself, keeping his eyes on the dark-haired figure on the park bench. Just because they hadn't seen the person they were waiting for, that didn't mean that he wasn't around somewhere, with Ryan in his sights.

Greg tried to remind himself that a meeting between the two of them was more or less what they wanted; they wanted this guy to threaten Ryan in some way, to make a move that the police could arrest him for. They wanted to catch him red-handed.

Somehow, he had the feeling that a man who had been able to take Ryan captive and violate him wouldn't be as easy to catch as Brass seemed to think. It would come down to more than just getting him to issue a threat that the wire Ryan was wearing would be able to pick up.

As long as they kept Ryan within sight, everything would be all right, he told himself, repeating the words inwardly like a mantra. So many people were watching him; he couldn't possibly be harmed, not out here within sight of everyone in the park.

Unless their nemesis had a gun that was equipped with a silencer, or a knife that he could plung into Ryan's body. The thought chilled Greg's blood; he didn't want to think about that bastard being close enough to Ryan to be able to touch him, much less hurt him.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. His nerves were stretched so taut that he was sure he would see his hands trembling if he lifted them in front of his face; being this nervous and on edge wasn't going to do Ryan any good once their target appeared.

He had to try to pull himself together, to keep a calm and steady demeanor. He couldn't risk letting his real feelings for Ryan show; the only person on the team who'd had a glimpse of them so far was Nick, and he didn't want anyone else to guess at their relationship.

That would only make things more complicated at work, and they didn't need to deal with that. Not along with the situation they were in now. They were already both losing enough sleep over their stalker, and he could only hope that this plan of Ryan's would take care of that problem.

But he really didn't think it would. All he could see was that his boyfriend was willingly placing himself in a dangerous situation; Greg had thought that this was a bad idea from the beginning, and nothing that had happened so far was changing his mind.

It didn't matter that their nemesis hadn't appeared; he could be anywhere in the park, armed with a gun that had a silencer. He could shoot Ryan from far away, or from close range. All he needed was to get a clear shot, and Greg's world would be ripped to shreds.

He could feel panic rising in his throat at the thought; he wanted to jump out to the car and scream Ryan's name, tell his boyfriend to get out of the park, that there had to be another way, that he shouldn't be putting himself out there as bait.

What good would that do? It would more than likely only put Ryan into more danger; they were all sure that the man they were looking for was out there somewhere, biding his time, waiting for what he felt was the right moment to make contact with Ryan.

The time to protest about this idea was long past; if he was going to be vehemently against it, he should have done that already. It was too late now; the plan was put into motion, and there was nothing that he could do to stop it from playing out to its conclusion.

Greg only hoped that it would end better than he thought it would; he was already more nervous than he wanted to admit, and even, if he was being completely honest, more than a little frightened. Just the thought of all the things that might happen terrified him.

It would be so easy for one small aspect of their plan to go wrong, and for Ryan to end up in a situation that could spiral rapidly out of control. He shouldn't be meeting this man alone in the park; there was no telling what could happen, even with people around.

He had made Ryan promise that he wasn't going to go anywhere alone with this guy that the cops might not be able to follow; but he had no way of knowing if his boyfriend would be able to keep that promise. If only there was some way to be absolutely assured of Ryan's safety!

There was no way to be absolutely positive that his boyfriend was protected. They were doing all they could, Greg reminded himself sternly. There would be enough people around to see if Ryan was in any kind of trouble, and go to his rescue.

But what if this guy managed to get Ryan somewhere out of their sights? he asked himself, the voice in the back of his mind sounding almost frantic. And worse, what if he found the wire? If he did, then he'd know something was up -- and Ryan would be in an even worse situation.

Yes, this had been a bad idea from the start. It wasn't something they should ever have agreed to doing, no matter how enthusiastic Ryan was about it, no matter how sure he was that this would be the best way to trap his nemesis and put him behind bars for good.

He wished that they could turn back the clock, that Ryan had never had this idea, and that they could come up with some other way of catching this man. But it was too late for that; this was all they had, and they had to go ahead with it. But he had a bad feeling about all of this.

It was too late to act on that feeling now. He should have done that when Ryan had first come up with this plan, before he had taken it to Brass and the team. All he could do now was wait it out, and hope that Ryan would somehow be kept safe.

And pray that his world wouldn't come crashing down around him.
