His eyes were sad.

That's all that Nick could think as he watched David Hodges through the glass of the break room windows stare into his coffee cup.

A melancholy soft blue, a color that reminded Nick of tears and loneliness.

He was so beautiful.

Beautiful in his recent grief, a grief that had been lingering about him for a month now. He continued to stare until he heard the whispers of two approaching techs striding down the hallway.

"Did you know Hodges' mother died? That's why he's been so quiet lately." He had heard a day tech mutter to his companion.

"Yeah, I heard. Don't know how a mother could put up with a son like that." They laughed and Nick wanted to lash out at them, to tell them they should know better, instead he caught the man by the elbow and glared at him.

"We respect the dead here. If you don't shut your fucking mouth and honor that you need to find another fucking job." Nick's voice was as hard as steel, the brown of his eyes burning so dark in anger they were almost black. The tech mumbled an apology and almost literality ran down the rest of the length of the hall.

Nick turned his head back to the break room, but David was no longer there. He felt a soft touch against his shoulder and turned to see David standing behind him. Nick couldn't speak, eyes that were beautiful to him at a distance were too much to handle close up. David lifted a hand as if to touch his cheek but instead let it hover over Nick's skin. He leaned forward until his mouth was level with Nick's ear.

"Thank You." Nick had heard that voice sarcastic; he had heard it angry, irritated, cocky, snarky, and a multitude of other cadences but never as soft as now, a gentle whisper that was more breath than actual words. He swallowed as David pulled back, turned and headed back to work his double.

Nick let out a whoosh of air and leaned heavily on the glass walls then chuckled to himself.

He'd be dammed if he hadn't just gone and fell in love with David Hodges.

Surprisingly after his revelation in the hallway Nick felt better than he had since his burial. He had never thought of falling in love with another man. He mused upon it as he sat on his back porch nursing a bottle of beer and watching the neighbor's kids play in the yard next door. After the Nigel Crane episode Nick had sublet his apartment and bought a house in a quiet little neighborhood not far from the lab. He knew Vegas would be his home now, knew after so many years that he was strong enough to make it here. Nick had not been able to stand the thought of living in his apartment knowing that man had been there, had touched everything he owned. He had actually thrown out all his old clothes and bought a whole new wardrobe.

So now he had his nice little house and he had survived what had been thrown at him. All he needed was David.

Greg had once joked to him as they hauled boxes into his new home about the lone chair Nick had sat out on his back porch, joked about how sad it looked there by itself. Nick had just laughed.

"When I meet the one Greg, I'll go buy another." He had replied. So after his morning in the hall with David, Nick had gone out and bought a chair. A plush soft blue lounging chair, as David seamed the lounging type, and set it next to his. Now as he sat next to that chair he couldn't help but smile and look forward to the next time he stared into those eyes, eyes so like the color of what Nick was now calling "David's chair".

It had been a long week for Nick, cases had piled up, Catherine had been bitchy, and out of the whole week he had only managed to see David a handful of times. There had been a very brief moment when they were alone together. Nick had smiled his best lazy, sexy smile and David had blushed a beautiful pink color. He had been about to speak when Grissom had strode in going on about some results he needed A.S.A.P and that Nick was needed in interrogation. As Grissom had left David gave him a soft smile and nodded. Nick felt his heart drop to his knees and dug up the courage to wink at David as he turned to walk out the door.

Nick smiled to himself as he thought back on their encounter. Currently he was watching TV. The men on it were talking over a dead body about a stopwatch and he wondered if it were his thoughts about David that made the conversation sound suggestive to him. As the two on the screen continued on now talking about gloves, Nick contemplated if you really could do a lot of things with a stopwatch. He smirked; he could imagine a stopwatch and a panting David underneath him as he timed how long it took him to get him off.

A knocking on the door interrupted his fantasy. He turned off the TV and went to open his front door.

It was David.

David bundled up in a soft black sweater two sizes too big. It took all of Nick's willpower not to grab the man and smother him to death. Instead he cocked his head and smiled gesturing from him to come in.

David nodded and sat on the couch. Nick could tell he was nervous about something.

"Would you like a beer?" Nick asked.

"That'd be nice." David said. Nick smiled again and a minute later he was back with David's drink. He sat down next to him on the couch. They were silent for a few moments.

"I didn't know you knew where I lived." Nick said leaning back resting his arm across the back of the couch.

"Well, Sanders has a big mouth. It's a wonder any of you CSI's have any secrets left." David deadpanned. Nick felt like dancing for joy. David was slowly getting back to being his old self, the sarcastic know -it -all that Nick loved.

"Ah Greg isn't that bad." Nick said with a laugh. David snorted.

"Yeah right. When he still worked in the lab Archie was constantly trying to murder him, especially after he let it slip in front of Grissom that Archie was the one who busted his two headed fetal pig in his office." Nicks eyes widened.

"Archie was the one who did that. I thought it might have been a janitor or something." David snorted.

"No, and surprisingly no one would have been the wiser had Sanders not blurted it out."

"Did Grissom get mad at Archie?" David shook his head.

"No. He told Archie he already knew."

"Well he is the supervisor; it wouldn't have been a hard puzzle for him to figure out." David nodded and sipped his beer. Nick stared at him for a few moments.

"Why are you here David?" He asked. David was silent as he contemplated what to say and Nick prepared himself for a witty remark, but what David said next left him stunned.

"Because I love you." David looked up and met Nick's startled gaze. Nick couldn't believe it. His silence must have been too long because David was soon placing his beer on the coffee table and stammering out an apology as he stood up. Reacting quickly Nick caught his hand and pulled David down into his lap crushing his lips against David's. Nick nipped and teased and was in heaven the moment he thrust his tongue into that warm welcoming mouth. His arms tightened around David's waist as they kissed fiercely.

After a few moments Nick gentled the kiss, lingering until David was boneless in his lap. He pulled away and brushed a hand down David's cheek.

"I love you too."

The next morning when Greg came over for their weekly video game battle he raised his eyebrows at a sleeping Hodges in a brand new chair on Nick's back porch wearing one of Nick's Texas A&M sweatshirts. Nick responded with a smile and knew that this was one secret he wouldn't mind for Greg to tell to anyone who would listen.
