Nick pulled up in front of Gil's condo and shut off the truck. He checked to make sure he had everything and let himself in to the condo. He knew he had to be quiet since Gil was probably still asleep, and his being there wouldn't be a surprise if he made too much noise. Nick was excited because this was his and Gil's 6-month anniversary. He couldn't believe that he and Gil were together at all, much less 6 months. He was glad that he had finally gotten the nerve up to tell Gil how he really felt.

Little did Nick know that all of that was about to change. He heard laughter coming from down the hallway, and went to investigate. Nick thought Gil had fallen asleep with the television on, but he heard the laughter again, and this time he heard TWO distinct voices this time. Nick got that funny feeling in his chest, and made his way down the hall slowly. What the hell was going on? Nick slowly eased Gil's bedroom door open and knew he would never forget the sight that greeted him as he stood there in the doorway.

Gil and Greg Sanders lay tangled in the bedsheets. Gil was moving at a slow, languid pace and Greg was urging him on. Greg happened to turn his head and look Nick directly in the eye. Greg immediately tried to dislodge Gil and sit up. Gil didn't understand at first, but got the message as soon as Greg pointed at the doorway. As Gil scrambled to get up from the bed, Nick turned and walked back through the condo. By the time Gil and Greg made it to the living room, they heard Nick's truck away.

After sending Greg home in a cab, Gil tried calling Nick. His phone went to voice mail and his home phone was busy. Gil knew he was in deep shit, and he knew that there would be consequences and repercussions for what he'd done. What Gil couldn't possibly know was that the consequences would be much farther reaching than he could have imagined.....

Nick looked at the clock and started getting ready for work. He was tired because he didn't get enough sleep and from worrying about what he'd seen at Gil's. He honestly couldn't say if he was madder at Gil or Greg. All he knew was that one or the other was gonna pay. One way or another.....

That night at the lab Gil asked to meet him in his office after assignments had been handed out. When Nick got to Gil's office he paused. He had a pretty good idea what was coming, but decided to go ahead and get it over with.

"You wanted to see me, Grissom?"

"Come in and shut the door, Nick.....We need to talk."

"I don't know that we do, Grissom....."

"We can't pretend it didn't happen!"

"I know that, but there's no use in you telling me how sorry you are, or how you didn't mean to hurt me, or that it won't happen again. You can save all that!"

"Nick....."

"Let me finish,Gil! It's not enough that you got me to trust you and fall in love with you. No! You had to stab me right through the heart, and you did it with my best friend!"

With that, Nick turned and fled Gil's office. Gil sat there at his desk, defeated. He knew Nick was telling the truth, and he also knew that he had made a huge mistake.

The next few weeks were hard for Nick. Since no one at the lab knew about he and Gil and what Gil had done with Greg, Nick really didn't have anyone to talk to. He toughed it out while Gil kept subtly trying to make amends and Greg bombarded him with requests that they meet so they could talk. Nick set stuff to Greg's lab through someone else, and requested that results be sent to whomever he was working with on the case. Greg finally got the hint and decided to leave things alone.

A few weeks later, the team was assembled waiting for assignments. Gil still hadn't shown up, and Catherine decided to proceed. She gave everyone their assignments and called Jim Brass to see if he could go and check on Grissom. Since it was a slow night, Catherine stayed in the lab in case Gil showed up. Brass called back and gave Catherine the news. Gil was dead! He was found in his condo dead from an apparent stabbing. Catherine wondered how she was going to tell the team......

When it was all said and done, everyone was baffled at how Gil died. One stab wound through the heart, no trace, no prints, no weapon. The case grew cold after a while, but members of Gil's old team would occasionally go over the file from time to time just to see if they could find something.

Nick stood at the grave looking down at Gil's tombstone. He had no flowers, he didn't seem overly upset, he just stood there. Before he turned to go, he started talking quietly.....

"They still don't know who did it, and they won't. I covered my tracks well. Now you know how it feels to be stabbed in the heart by someone you really love....."

THE END
