DB was standing in the corridor looking at a file trying to decide which lab he needed to visit first.  He looked up when he heard laughter coming from reception and saw Nick talking and laughing with a man.  And he stared.

He knew the guy.  He definitely knew the guy and yet...he didn't.  He frowned in concentration trying to remember from where he knew the guy.  He was obviously well known to Nick; they seemed very familiar with each other and were leaning on the reception desk facing each other and mimicking their stances.  Very familiar.

He shook himself slightly when he realised he was staring but he was annoyed with himself for not being able to put a name to the face.

He looked down at his file and decided he'd ask Nick at the earliest opportunity or it would drive him mad.  Well...madder.  He smiled to himself and looked up again just in time to see Nick and the man kiss, just briefly.

'Hello', he thought, 'very familiar'.

And the man left and Nick turned and walked towards him grinning.

"Hey, man.  You look lost."

"I am lost...in thought.  Who was that man you were with?"  He noticed that in an instant Nick's demeanour changed and he became defensive.

"Why?  Something wrong?"

"Yes.  Yes, there is.  I know him.  I know I know him but I don't know who he is...does that make any sense?"

"Not much."  But Nick was back to being amused at him with that familiar wry smile he wore when talking and working with him.  He liked Nick.

"Come on!  Put a man out of his misery.  Why do I know him?"

"Gil Grissom; ring any bells?"

"Oh, my goodness.  Dr Gil Grissom.  The great alumnus of this very lab?  Entomologist of the first order?"

"That's the man."

"And you two..."

"...partners for years."

"Nick, I would be very honoured if you would introduce us sometime.  He's a forensic hero of mine and one of the reasons I took this job was because of his work in this lab."

"Sure.  Whenever you want."

"Thank you.  Gosh, you're lucky you get to sleep with the great man...I would have given you a run for your money if I'd known."  He laughed.

"You'd have lost, man."  Nick laughed with him and they parted and walked in different directions but DB turned and called after Nick.

"Nick, don't tell my wife I said that.  She's liberal...but she wouldn't forgive me for being unfaithful."  He grinned at Nick and then went on his way.

He could hear Nick laughing.

The End
