Snow starts to fall around dinnertime, and by midnight the city has turned silent and white and strange. Danny goes to the window, huddled in sweats, and watches as a lone car creeps down the street at five miles an hour, throwing soft sprays of snow under its tires and going, briefly, into a slow-motion slalom as the driver loses control. Danny holds his breath even though he knows it can't do much damage at that speed, and even though there's no one else out there to get hit, but then it rights itself and keeps going; and in another minute it moves through the intersection and is gone.

"Still coming down?" Mac asks from behind him, and Danny nods.

"Yeah." The streetlights reflect off the snow and turn the sky pink and orange against the black, making the drifts glow like an alien landscape. More snow is piling up on the windowsill, and the panes are coated in fine twists of ice, turning the window into a surreal garden, like something out of a Dadaist painting. The glass crackles under his palm when he reaches out to touch it, and Danny wonders what would happen if this turned into a real blizzard, if he and Mac got stuck here together. As it is, he's not going anywhere tonight. He could think of worse ways to spend a Saturday-night snowstorm.

Mac puts an arm around his waist and presses one hand to Danny's stomach. His body feels solid and warm. "We could make Irish coffee," he says.

"Yeah, we could," Danny says, but he leans back, letting Mac's hand angle lower. Mac's breathing sharpens, and Danny turns in his arms so they can kiss.

They kiss and Mac's mouth is as warm as the rest of him, and more ice is freezing on the windows as Danny pulls him close and shuts his eyes to the storm.
