The piercing screams woke both men instantly.

“Oh, man, not again. I’ve got to go to work.”  Nick sighed, resignedly.

“Go back to sleep, sweetheart; I’ll go see what’s wrong.”

“Thanks.  I’ll take a turn, I promise.”  But Nick snuggled down under the blankets again and he heard Gil pad out of their room, his bare feet on the floorboards making a gentle slapping sound.

Nick didn’t fall asleep but listened out for Gil.  She stopped crying and he could hear Gil murmuring to her, his words indistinct but the tone was clearly soothing.  He was so good with her…a natural.

He could hear movement and was trying to make out what Gil was doing, screwing his eyes up tight to make his hearing keener…but to no avail.

He lay there a little longer but had to get up and see what was going on.  He made his way to the room and pushed the door open.  Gil was sitting in a chair rocking the little girl on his lap.  She was playing with a teething ring and looked full of beans; her little hands and feet jiggling around as she grinned at Nick.

“Hey, sweetie pie, what were you howling at?”  He kneeled down in front of them both.

“She was wet through…I changed her diaper and sleep suit…she said she likes this pink polka dot one the best.”

“Do you like it best?”  Nick tickled her tummy and she gurgled, very happily.

“She’s very beautiful.  A Stokes through and through…she has your hair and eyes, she’ll break hearts when she’s a big girl.”

“I didn’t break hearts…”

“…I bet you did.  All those girls drooling over you and you liked the boys instead.”

“That’s different.  Isn’t it sweetie…different altogether.”  He was tickling her feet now.

“You should be in bed it’s after one and you have to be up at half four.”

“I know, but she’s irresistible.”

“She’s also not the tiniest bit tired.  I’ll stay with her and you try and get some sleep, she’ll drop off eventually.”

“Okay. You’re very good at the baby stuff you know.”  He smiled at Gil and then was peeping at her through his hands.  “Nighty-night, Ellie.”

“Eleanor-Rose.”

“I know, I know.”  Nick didn’t move at all and tickled her feet once more and she chuckled and gurgled and without missing a beat spewed formula down the front of her pink polka dots.  “That’s gross.”

“It’s what babies do.  Another change for her…”

Just then they heard their front door open and some giggling and spoken ‘hushes’ floated up their stairs.

“Mommy and Daddy are home…”

“Thank God: I don’t mind babysitting when they’re clean and smell nice…but diapers and vomit and getting up in the night…not my thing.”

“Honestly, Nick, I would have thought with all the babies in your family you’d be used to it…”

“…I made a lot of pocket money babysitting my nieces and nephews when I was in school and I thought I’d got out of it and now I’m stuck with grand-nieces when they visit Vegas…can we move to somewhere that isn’t a tourist attraction?” Nick was whispering as the parents approached the room.

“There you are…oh, she loves you Gil…well she loves anyone willing to get out of bed and play with her in the middle of the night.  You need to be firm with her or she’ll wrap you around her little finger.  Come on, Eleanor-Rose, let your Great Uncles get back to bed.”

“I think she had wind, she’s just regurgitated some formula and needs changing.” Gil handed his charge over to her mother.

Gil was obviously a world renowned baby expert as well as a forensic entomologist, Nick thought and smirked at his partner.

“She doesn’t need changing, I’ll just wipe it off…Uncle Nick used to look after me, didn’t you?  I don’t think he ever changed me.”

“I did not.  And you were always wet and windy.”

“Thanks for that, Nick.”  Her husband piped up.

“You’re welcome. Come on hon, let’s go back to bed and finish what we started.”

“Too much information, Nick!”

“Sleep.  Our sleep was interrupted.”  Nick asserted. “Night.  See you when I get back from work.”

They all said their goodnights and a few minutes later Gil and Nick were back snuggled in their bed.

“Did you ever want children?”

“No.  You?”

“No.”

“Good job.”
