Greg kicked up sand in front of him as he walked along the beach, keeping a careful eye on the house. He'd learned from experience how dangerous it could be simply to walk along this stretch of sand, but he wasn't going to let one bad experience scar him for life.

If he stayed hidden in the house, and never came out here onto the beach, then Wo Fat and his thugs would have scored a victory. He wasn't going to let them intimidate him.

Steve didn't like for him to do this, but he had refused to let his fears get the better of him. And besides, Steve would be joining him in just a moment, he told himself. His boyfriend had merely gone back into the house to get them a couple of sodas.

Still, he'd feel safer once Steve was back by his side.

Greg's thoughts went back to what was weighing heavily on his mind these days -- that letter from Nick, and his ex-boyfriend's impending visit to Hawaii. If Nick knew about what had happened, he would say that Greg wouldn't have to worry about things like that in Vegas.

No matter what Nick said, he'd never go back to Las Vegas. That part of his life was over; it had been hard to leave so much of his life behind there, but it was time to start a new chapter. There were too many memories in Vegas that he didn't want to go back to.

True, some of those memories -- a lot of them, actually -- were good ones. But there were also far too many bittersweet memories that were associated with that city, and he didn't want to relive them. He'd left for a good reason, and he was happy with what he'd done.

He had a good life here, Greg thought with a smile. He had a job he loved, and a man he loved. A man who loved him more fiercely and protectively than he'd ever been loved before in his entire life. A man who he never wanted to be parted from.

His life here was everything he'd wanted it to be, and more.

Nick's being here would stir up those bittersweet memories, and probably tug at his heart. But no matter what his former boyfriend said, he wasn't going to leave Hawaii. Nick might have a smooth-talking silver tongue, but Greg had become immune to that a long time ago.

His ex would just have to understand that nothing was going to bring them back together. If he couldn't, then that was his problem, not Greg's.

Greg raised a hand to shade his eyes as he glanced back at the house, relieved to see Steve coming down the front steps. He would face the future with Steve by his side, and those memories of his old life would stay in the past, where they belonged.
