Nick laughed when he looked inside the card.  Gil didn't do it very often which made it all the more special when he did do it...it was just a card to say, 'Missing you', but inside it Gil had written, 'Missing you like crazy.  Love you very much and can't wait until the 3rd Gil xox'.

Gil was over in Hawaii for three weeks taking a bug class over there.  He'd already been gone for two weeks when this card landed in the mail box.  Nick missed him too...but they had talked every day on Skype and on their phones and texted, too.  But it was so kind and generous of him to remember, when he was so busy, that Nick loved and appreciated these little tokens a great deal.

He sat back on their couch and remembered the first card he'd ever had from Gil.  A birthday card all those years ago...was it seven?  Yeah.  It had been the first birthdays they'd spent together and Nick had bought a funny card for Gil and then the next day Gil had bought a card for him...he was sure it was a child's card with some busy little bees on the front but inside Gil had written, 'From Grissom'.   Just that.  Nothing else.

Nick had been very upset but had tried to contain himself...but it had been only three months after his abduction and he was still raw around the edges.   Gil had seen through him and eventually Nick had had to confess that the curt greeting had hurt him.  Gil was astounded.  He couldn't believe that such a small thing had hurt Nick so much.

Trying to explain to Gil that it looked and sounded as if he was sending a card to a co-worker...not his lover...was difficult.  He knew they were men, but a little show of affection wouldn't hurt.

Gil had nodded his head and studied the card that he'd sent to Nick and then went to the table and retrieved the card that Nick had given him the day before.  'For Gil.  Hope you have a wonderful birthday.  Love Nick x'

"It was the best birthday I've ever had, Nicky..."  Gil had said to him.  "...because I have you, now and forever.  I promise to do better in the future."

Nick smiled to himself at the memory.  He learned his lessons well and now every birthday, Christmas, anniversary and St Valentine's Day, Nick always had a lovely card with a loving inscription...okay, so he had to remind him every birthday, Christmas, anniversary and St Valentine's Day to get a card...but it was always sent with love.

But sometimes, like today, he would do it without being prompted, and it made Nick remember just how much he loved Gil.

The End
