Gil stared morosely into his beer, ignoring the bustle of a Saturday night at the neighborhood bar . He wished Jim hadn't talked him into this. He really wasn’t in the mood for company, but then Jim already knew this. That’s probably why he’d asked him here.

Another beer was plopped down in front of him, and he was regarded with unmeasured scrutiny. "Man, what is it with you tonight? No. Not just tonight. You’ve been like this for weeks now.

"You wouldn't believe it." Gil stated firmly.

"Try me."

Gil looked up to meet concerned eyes. He sighed, glancing away. The desperate need to have someone to talk to—just to tell someone, had grown at the compassion he’d witnessed on his friend's face.

"Whatever it is, it isn’t doing you any good keeping it to yourself. So what gives? I'm a police captain, remember? I’ve heard it all."

"Not this." Gil took a deep breath, steeling himself to say what he'd intended. The alcohol loosened his tongue just enough, and he took the plunge, "I'm in love."

"So what's wrong with that?" Jim prompted.

Another breath, gulp of beer. "With Warrick." He stared at the top of the bar in the stark silence that followed.

"Does he know?"

Gil gave a short, bitter laugh. "You’ve got to be joking."

"He should know," Jim said quietly.

"Why?"

"The man's getting married in a week," he reminded.

"Exactly."

"So your just gonna wait until the part where the pastor asks if there's anyone there who knows of a reason... to speak up?"

"Jim!" Gil admonished. "You're taking this awfully calm... I mean, aren't you a little surprised?"

"Surprised? Guess I should be. It’s not like the idea's ever crossed my mind. But now that you tell me... it just doesn’t seem so... surprising."

"Well, it does to me. It's not like we've been carrying on or anything. We’ve always been just platonic friends." Gil paused, agonized. "I don't know how this happened."

"Talk to Warrick," Jim pushed.

Gil shook his head. "I can‘t. There’s no way to stop his wedding to Tina and I wouldn’t even if I could. I don’t want to risk our friendship or our working relationship. He's got his whole future ahead of him, with a beautiful bride. Not to mention… what Sara would do to me if she found out. God, what a mess!” He laughed at the image that it brought to mind. "No. Too much to risk, no matter which way it goes. I'm not willing to risk that. I need him too much. His presence has always been *somehow* comforting"

"So what are you gonna do?" Jim asked.

"Get over it." Gil ordered another beer.

The End
