They didn't have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I hear your laugh like a serenade

"I need you to process this a.s.a.p." says Nick, who doesn't look up at the DNA tech.

"Uhm, you can wait in line with everyone else." Greg's voice is filled with annoyance, but damn, if that CSI isn't hot.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize that you were the new guy. I'm Nick Stokes." Nick has the grace to be embarrassed and to notice how smokin' the new DNA/trace lab rat is.

"Greg Sanders. Nice to meet you." Greg extends his hand.

They felt the attraction immediately, and when they shook hands it was like an electric shock went through them both. It surprises them, but they don't mind it one bit-in fact, it's something they've both been looking for and needing.

"Would you like to go to breakfast with me after shift?" Greg is shy and sincere. He's hoping he won't get turned down.

Nick gives Greg his biggest and most charming smile. "Sure."

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

Breakfasts turned into dates, which turned into dinners, which turned into overnight stays, which turned into a love neither anticipated being as strong as theirs is.

I slip in bed when you're asleep
To hold you close and feel your breath on me
Tomorrow there'll be so much to do
So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you

When the lab blew up and Greg got moved from the burn unit, Nick slept beside him and held him through his nightmares. After Nick was kidnapped, buried, eaten by ants, and almost blown up, Greg held Nick through his nights at the hospital and the recovery stay in Texas. When a gang of kids who were attacking tourists beat Greg nearly to death, Nick again slept beside him in the hospital and soothed him through his nightmares. When Warrick was killed, they comforted one another and carried the weight of the loss together-never alone.

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

After ten years together, they went through the required counseling to adopt or surrogate a child. Never before had they considered being fathers because they were gay; Nick has a dozen of nieces and nephews, and Greg has a few cousins that he was close to. They had figured that that was enough, but they were wrong. Fatherhood held an excitement for them both that made them love each other so much more than either thought possible.

As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful
You can close your eyes when you're miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade

Their sons and their daughter had all graduated from high school this year. Evan and Mitch are paternal twins, and their daughter, Annika, was a surrogate child that Nick's sister Michelle was more than willing to carry when they got a donated egg. The three children are smarter than whips and are all becoming amazing people. With tears in the two father's eyes, they watched the children cross the stage for their diplomas and cross the threshold to becoming adults.

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

At Mitch's wedding, and in fact, all of their children's weddings, Nick and Greg were reminded of the effects that their love has had. They've given three children a wonderful home filled with love and support, helped each other learn new skills and interests, and to truly understand how precious life is.

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

Never has a day gone by that the two men haven't told each other that they love one another, not since the first time they said those three little words. It didn't matter if they fought, if they were angry, if they were disappointed, or if they were just fine. The words came first and still felt as precious as the first time.

Because they never gave up.

A/N: The song is "Lullaby" by the Dixie Chicks. Pretty song too. This just sorta jumped into my head today and would not leave until I wrote it out, so here we are. Made concentrating in Introduction to Social Work and Practical Accounting difficult. Read and review! I love reviews-they tell me if my writings worth looking at.
