Series: A CSI Babies Christmas

It was a snowy evening and young Nick Stokes and Greg Sanders were in their Nanny’s backyard building a snowman. Greg struggled to bend down in his overstuffed snowsuit to pick up some of the freshly fallen snow. Finally succeeding, he picked up a few handfuls and placed them unceremionially on the snowman’s head.

“Greg!” shouted Nick, “What are you doing to Pancho?”

“Givin’ him hair,” replied Greg, simply.

The younger boy smiled as he molded the “hair” into the desired shape. When he was done, Nick gasped.

“Greg! Snowmen don’t have mohawks!”

“This one does.”

~~

Inside, Nanny was helping her two newest charges bake Christmas cookies.

“Are they done yet, Nanny?” asked the younger one. A blonde girl far too intelligent for her age.

“Riley, you know cookies take a long time to make,” said the other child in the kitchen, a young African-American boy with glasses.

Riley couldn’t think of an answer that wouldn’t get her in trouble, so she simply stuck out her tongue at the boy.

“Riley Jane Adams! I saw that!” exclaimed Nanny, “Apologize to Ray!”

“Riley sighed and folded her arms, “I’m sorry, Ray,” she muttered.

“It’s OK, Riley,” said Ray, putting down the book he was reading. Once Nanny’s back was turned, he made a silly face causing Riley to giggle.

“Nanny?” asked Ray.

“Yes?”

“Can I have another cookbook to read? I wanna try to make a gingerbread house next.”

“Of course, Ray,” said Nanny, grabbing another festive cookbook.

"Nanny?” came a new voice from the doorway.

“Yes, Catherine?”

“Why isn’t Warrick here?”

~~

Nanny had moved Catherine into the playroom so she could talk to her in peace.

“Warrick isn’t here, Catherine, because he can’t be,” explained Nanny.

“Oh. Is he with his grandma?” asked Catherine.

“In a way, yes,” said Nanny, “Do you remember what happened to your daddy?”

“Mommy says that Daddy’s in Heaven with the angels,” said Catherine, “and someone named ‘Frank Sinatra’.”

Nanny chuckled as she wiped a tear from her eye.

“Is Warrick with Frank Sinatra, Nanny?”

“Yes, Sweetie, Warrick’s with the angels. But you know what?”

“What?”

“Warrick will always be with you. Right here,” said Nanny, pointing to Catherine’s heart and giving her a tight hug,”Now! Do you want to come with me and help Ray and Riley make cookies? You can lick the spoon…”

Catherine’s face lit up. All of her anxiety over Warrick had been replaced with the potential for a sugar rush.

Later that night in the bedroom, the kids were all changed into their pajamas. Ray was already on his fifth cookbook and Catherine was happily braiding Riley’s hair, much to the latter’s dismay.

"Bet I can jump higher than you, Nicky!” shouted Greg, running over to his bed.

Nick took off his cowboy hat and placed his favorite toy horse gently on his bed, “Stay there, Thunder.”

Nick ran over to Greg’s bed, almost tripping over on of Ray’s toy motorcycles, “Nuh uh! I can jump higher, Greg!”

“Oh yeah?” taunted Greg, climbing onto his bed.

“Uh huh!” replied Nick, climbing onto Greg’s bed.

The two started jumping, neither one getting any higher than the other.

Suddenly, Ray heard a creak down the hall, “Nick, Greg, Nanny’s coming.”

Still jumping, Nick and Greg looked at each other and smiled, falling to the bed, their faces flush.

As soon as they landed, Nanny opened the door, “Ok everyone! Santa won’t come if you’re awake. Nick, you’re going to have to sleep in your own bed tonight.”

Nick frowned and shuffled to his bed. He hugged his horse, Thunder as he ducked under the sheets.

“Good night everyone!”

“Good night, Nanny!”

~~

Downstairs, Nanny opened the door when she heard the car drive up.

“I’m so glad you guys could come. They’ll be so happy to see you,” said Nanny to the two figures as they emerged from the car, “How was Ecuador?”

~~

“It’s Christmas! It’s Christmas!” shouted Greg, jumping up and down on his bed.

Riley picked up a pillow and tossed it clear across the room, hitting Greg in the head. Greg grabbed the pillow and ran over to Riley’s bed. Already awake, Riley smiled as she dodged the attack she knew was coming. Rolling out of bed, she tackled Greg to the floor and started tickling him. By this point the others had woken up and were happily watching the tickling fight.

“Riley!” panted Greg, between laughs, “I give up! I give up!”

“Good!” said Riley, victorious.

“Don’t you guys wanna check the presents?” asked Ray, putting on his glasses.

~~

When the kids arrived in the playroom, they were shocked by the amount of presents under the tree.

As they each picked up a present, they heard a voice coming from the kitchen.

“I hope you guys don’t start without me,” said a young man, stepping into the playroom with a mug of cocoa.

“Gilly!” shouted Nick, Greg and Catherine, running over to their friend and former babysitter.

“Hi guys. Merry Christmas!!” said Gilly Grissom, smiling.

“But I thought you were in Southa – South –“said Greg, stumbling over the words, “Sofa Merica!” he blurted, triumphantly.

Gilly smiled, “I was in South America as an exchange student, but they let me come back for the holidays,” he explained, “Nice to see you again Ray.”

“Hi Gilly!” exclaimed Ray, joining in on the group hug.

“You know Ray?” asked Catherine.

I helped out with his preschool class a few times,” explained Gilly, “and you must be Riley Adams. I’ve heard all about you.”

“You have?” asked Riley.

“Nanny’s told me all about you,”

“She has?”

“Yes, and how proud she is of you and the woman you’re becoming. I can see she forgot to mention just how smart you are,”

Riley smiled and hugged Gilly.

“Oh, and I have one more surprise,” said Gilly, “You can come out now!”

From the kitchen, a young brunette girl came walking out smiling.

“Sara!” exclaimed Greg, running over to hug his friend.

“Best Christmas ever!” exclaimed Nick.

“And God bless us, everyone.” Said Greg.
