"It's nice to know you were there
Thanks for acting like you cared
And making me feel like I was the only one
It's nice to know we had it all
Thanks for watching as I fall
And letting me know we were done"
- My Happy Ending - Avril Lavigne

He pulled the covers over his head and waited for the sound of the front door to close before he risked opening his eyes. Ignoring the pain in his head, he sighed dejectedly and rolled out of bed onto the floor. The floor was cold, but it felt good so he pressed his forehead to it and waited for his heartbeat to slow down from its mad rushed pace.

'It was all too good to be true.'

Sighing again, he pushed himself up and headed off to the shower, hoping that the nice hot water would help soothe his aching muscles and his poor shattered heart. It helped. At least... the aching muscles part. Driving into work he resolved not to think about last night and just act as if nothing had happened. He wouldn't let someone like Nick Stokes breaking his heart affect his work.

Walking into his lab, he turned his music on loudly as his way of letting people know to stay out unless they absolutely had to come in. Concentrating on what he was doing seemed to be just a bit harder than he thought, especially with Nick just across the hall in the A/V lab.

When it was time for his break, he had planned to just keep on working, except Jacqui came into the room and dragged him to the diner just down the street from the lab and told him to spill. He told her that there was nothing to spill, but she gave him a pointed look that reminded him way too much of his mother and he ended up telling her everything. How Nick had asked him to go to breakfast after shift. How they had gone back to his apartment for a beer or two or seven. How he couldn't remember who had kissed whom first and that all he did know was that when he woken up this morning, Nick was sneaking out without so much as a note saying good-bye.

He tried no to cry, he really did, but he couldn't stop the pain from engulfing his chest. The kind of pain where it hurts so much you can't breathe, and all you can do is gasp for breath and pray to God that the pain will stop.

Jacqui just held him in her arms and let him cry for as long as he needed. When his sobs turned to sniffles, she lifted his head, wiped the tears from his cheeks, kissed each eyelid and said to him the words that he would remember the rest of his life. The words that helped him to find his happy ending.

"Hearts break... yet brokenly, live on."
