Speed browsed through the bookshelf, looking for anything new or that would interest him. He didn’t normally go to some of the big chain bookstores, preferring the smaller hole in the wall stores. But he was bored and stuck out shopping with Alexx.

He loved her did, but the woman was a shopping machine. She had decided her baby needed to do his Christmas shopping early. Speed looked around the store, seeing the Halloween displays; October was a bit too early in his opinion.

Speed knew it and Alexx knew it; the shopping trip was to get him out of the house. She had told him it was time he stopped moping around and get out. Meet someone, have some fun. He explained that he didn’t want to meet someone, that no one understood him, and he preferred his two cats and his books.

That’s when she promptly called him a cat lady and dragged him Christmas shopping.

What Speed didn’t tell the mother hen was that he didn’t want to meet anyone because he had already met someone. Someone he couldn’t have; he had made the fatal error of falling in love with his boss.

Damn Horatio Caine and those blue eyes of his.

Today we took a walk up the street,
And picked a flower and climbed the hill,
Above the lake

The one thing Speed hated about the chain bookstores was the fact they piped some new group on to their customers, hoping they would by the new album. This was a bookstore not a record store.

And secret thoughts were said aloud,
We watched the faces in the clouds,
Until the clouds had blown away
Were we ever somewhere else,
You know, it's hard to say

Though Speed had to admit the singer had a nice soft folk voice, very soothing. He moved towards one of the speakers to listen. He was a man who studied words. Songs were poetry put to music. Sometimes they could be as moving or inspiring as a passage from a book.

And I never saw blue like that before,
Across the sky, Around the world
You've given me all you have and more,
And no one else has ever shown me how,
To see the world the way I see it now,
Oh, I, I never saw blue like that

Speed stood frozen to the spot, listening. The words captivated him. The song took on a special meaning for him. It gripped at him, pulled at his soul.

I can't believe a month ago I was alone,
I didn't know you,
I hadn't seen or heard you're name

He moved towards the front of the information booth. His eyes searched out Alexx to make sure she didn’t see him asking about the artists.

And even now, I'm so amazed,
It's like a dream; It's like a rainbow,
It's like the rain

And some things are the way they are,
And words just can't explain

The song was everything he felt about Horatio. It was what he felt when he looked into those deep blue eyes. They showed so much emotion. When they turned on him, he melted.

Cause I never saw blue like that before,
Across the sky, Around the world
You've given me all you have and more,
And no one else has ever shown me how
To see the world the way I see it now
Oh, I, I never saw blue like that before

When the job got too much it was Horatio who kept Speed going, pointing out why they did their jobs. The Trace expert would just watch as Horatio gave his all to the case, promising the family that he would find their loved one’s killer.

And it feels like now, it feels always,
And it feels like coming home

He had dreamed of those blue eyes, what they would look filled with love, being the center of that focus.

I never saw blue like that before,
Across the sky, Around the world
You've given me all you have and more
And no one else has ever shown me how
To see the world the way I see it now

But he knew he would never tell, never take that step. He would love him for afar, content to be friends with the man.

Oh, I, I never saw blue like that before
Oh, I, I never saw blue like that

He quickly bought the CD and stuck it in his backpack.

It had been weeks since he had bought the CD. The song stayed with him constantly. He found himself humming it at work, much to his embarrassment when Alexx caught him.

Christmas rolled around and it was the lab’s annual party. He tended to avoid the get-togethers. They were loud, boring, and he always left with a headache. This party was no different.

Speed’s goal was to stop in, say hello, grab some food and leave. Alexx and Calleigh trapped him. He glared at both of them, but neither budged. He sighed, grabbed some food and tried to hide in the corner.

There was one advantage being at the party. He could watch Horatio to his heart’s content. The redhead was talking with his sister-in-law. Speed had wondered why she didn’t take Horatio up on his offer. It had been obvious to everyone he had been pining over her, and yet she hooked up with Stetler. Speed shook his head. Stetler. Horatio. Stetler. Horatio. Nope not even a second thought, Horatio won hands down.

Today we took a walk up the street,
And picked a flower and climbed the hill,
Above the lake

Speed jerked when he heard the song. He glanced over at the stereo then up at Eric.

“Hey, found your CD, she’s a cool new artist hope you don’t mind.”

Speed decided he needed to kill the Cuban, slowly.

“Wow, who knew our Speedy would be hip with music?” Calleigh grinned at him. Both of them needed to die.

Speed set his plate down and headed for the door.

“Speed…” Eric called out after him.

He ignored his friend’s calls. He just couldn’t be in the same room with Horatio while that song played.

Speed stood up on the roof and looked out over the city. He loved this city. Only in Miami could you wear a t-shirt at Christmas. He heard footsteps and turned, fully expecting Alexx to drag him back downstairs. The brunette was a bit surprised to see Horatio.

Horatio stopped less than a foot away from Speed. His blue eyes were full of emotions Speed had never seen in them. Confusion, fear, yet hope and love?

“Why?” Horatio simply asked.

Speed smiled. He should have known nothing got past him.

I never saw blue like that before

Horatio smiled, took his hand, and pulled him close. Grinning, he held up a swig of mistletoe. Speed leaned forward. It was a soft kiss, just lips barely brushing, but it was the start of something even more.

Speed woke up on Christmas Morning to the sight of piercing blue eyes.
