Danny crouched over a dead body, taking photographs when Mac arrived.

“What happened?” Mac asked.

“It looks like she fell from either the third or fourth floor,” Don answered, coming up from behind.

Mac looked up and turned to Don. “You don’t know which floor?”

Don shrugged. “Different statements from witnesses.”

Mac nodded. “We need to search both floors, then.” Just then, Mac heard a voice from behind telling them that there was no need. Mac frowned; he didn’t recognize the voice and turned around to see a man standing next to Don.

“The victim fell from the fourth floor,” the man was telling Don who was listening. Mac summarized that Don seemed to know the man pretty well.

“How did you know?” Mac asked, puzzled. The man turned slightly and flashed a smile.

“I looked at the way she fell and where she fell and concluded that she could have lived in either 303 or 403, since it was impossible that she fell from the other apartments,” the man explained. “If she did, there would have been some evidence. So I went to 303 and found that a man was already living there, so it left us with 403.”

Mac nodded, looking down at the victim and then looking up, and could see where the man was coming from.

“I went in and found some things which could only belong to a female, so I assumed that the apartment belonged to the victim, but to make sure I went over to the balcony and looked over. I found something on a hook and picked it up and found that it was a cloth which matched the victim’s sweater.” Tony held the evidence bag up with the cloth inside.

Mac was impressed with the man’s summarization and he seemed to know what he was doing. Mac wondered where this man came from.

“Good job,” Mac smiled. “I’m Mac Taylor.”

The man put a hand out and introduced himself as Tony DiNozzo.

“Nice to meet you, Tony,” Mac said. “Where did you transfer from?”

“NCIS, sir.”

“NCIS?” Mac asked, surprised.

Tony chuckled. “Navy Criminal...” but Mac interrupted him before he could finish, “Investigation Service. I know that, but I’m surprised that you chose the NYPD?”

“I was a cop before NCIS, so it made sense, really.”

Mac nodded. “Right, we should get up to the fourth floor then.”

Mac and Don left Tony with Danny and went up to the fourth floor. On the way up, Mac found out that Tony was partnered with Don and would act as a liaison between the two departments. Mac was pleased that Don had a partner, finally. Mac felt that Tony was the right man for the job from what he saw earlier. He realized that Tony had good observation skills and would make a useful addition to the team.

* * * *

They were sitting at an oval table in the briefing room, going over the case from earlier.

Tony sat back, watching them. He was introduced earlier and asked to be involved in the briefing just to get a feeling and to find out how it worked.

He listened to Stella talking about the photographs and telling them about the results from the M.E. It was found that the victim was already dead when she supposedly jumped from her apartment. Tony watched Stella closely and saw that she was the mother hen of the group, from the way she behaved with Mac, and the rest of the team. He saw that Stella made sure that everyone was comfortable and that everyone had a drink before they started. He also saw that Stella made sure that everyone had a say. He smiled, she was similar to Ducky. Ducky was like the grandfather of the team back in D.C. He always was the one who attended to them when they were hurt or made sure that Gibbs listened to them and to encourage them to speak out if they felt it was necessary.

Tony shook his head; he didn’t really need to think about Ducky...or Gibbs.

Tony moved on to Hawkes. Now, Hawkes was difficult to read. He could see that Hawkes was much a part of the team, and that he had much respect for Stella and Mac. But the rapport between him and the rest of the team was slightly different from Danny’s or Don’s. He realized that Hawkes was the kind of man who, pretty much, kept to himself. But it didn’t affect the teamwork unless Hawkes allowed it to. Tony concluded that Hawkes wasn’t the kind who let his personal life get into the way of his job.

Tony didn’t like Lindsay right from the first time he met her. He had an uneasy feeling about her. Tony watched how Lindsay behaved with Danny and realized that Lindsay was in love with Danny. He remembered from when they came into the room, and Don was about to sit down next to Danny, when Lindsay rushed in and sat down. Don had a thunderous look on his face as he looked at Lindsay from behind and took the chair next to her. Through the briefing, Tony noticed that Don kept glancing over to Lindsay, as if he wanted to tell Lindsay off, to tell her to keep away from Danny. Tony noticed that Danny was obvious to what was going on. Tony gave a mental chuckle; how could Danny be so blind to what was happening in his face. No, Tony didn’t like anyone who would try to break relationships up or to try to get into their way and this was what Lindsay was trying to do.

Tony knew there was someone missing from the team, but he wasn’t sure who. He made a mental shrug.

Tony looked at the team again and knew that this was a good team and they were like a family, something that Tony wanted to be a part of, and he hoped that he would fit in well.

Suddenly, there was a jolt in his ribs, and Tony looked up to see Don grinning. “Were you ever listening?”

“Oh, of course, I was, Donnie boy,” Tony said. There was a snicker behind Don and Don turned to glare at Danny, who put his hands up. “I was just leaving...” and backed away from Don but he winked at Tony, who winked back. Don shook his head. “Come on, we need to go back to the NYPD and look up people who were close to the victim and find out which one of them might have had a motive to kill her.”

Tony nodded and stood up. They met Hawkes at the doors. Hawkes put a hand on Tony’s shoulder and asked if he has played basketball on the roof yet.

“No, I haven’t,” Tony said.

Hawkes shook his head, disapproving. “We must change that. You’re not a part of the team, unless you play basketball with us, Tony. You should join us on Saturday for a game...you up for that?”

Tony smiled. “I’m game.”

Don groaned. Danny and Hawkes turned to him, puzzled. “Tony was a semi-pro in college and was on the verge of becoming a full time pro!”

Danny’s eyes widened in surprise as Hawkes turned to Tony, stunned. “Is that true, man?”

Tony shrugged, a little embarrassed. He had forgotten that Don knew about his playing days.

“What happened?”

“I got hit badly and my knee got messed up badly. I wasn’t able to play professionally after that, so I went to the Police Academy instead.”

Hawkes patted Tony on the back as Danny made a small nod. “I had the same thing happen to me.”

Tony was surprised and looked at Danny. “What happened?”

“I was in a wheelchair for a while,” was his short answer.

Tony grimaced and knew better than to not ask any more questions so he left it. Just then, Mac came up to them.

“Tony, could we talk?” Mac asked.

“Sure, “Tony shrugged, and Don told him that he would wait downstairs for him, as he, Danny and Hawkes got in the elevator.

“Come with me,” Mac said. Tony frowned, puzzled but followed Mac anyway.

* * * *

Tony was shaking in the elevator after the talk he had with Mac. As it turned out, Mac wanted to know a little more about Tony and his previous job with NCIS. Tony explained and when he was asked why he left NCIS, Tony had to fudge the truth and told him that he felt it was time to move on.

Tony leaned back against the wall, after pressing the emergency button. He had to calm down. He didn’t expect the talk with Mac to shake him and to make him remember.

Tony was standing outside Gibbs’s house, nervous. Today was the day he was going to tell Gibbs the truth about how he felt and that he wanted to submit to him.

When the door opened, Gibbs gestured for him to come in and smiled at him, Tony’s heart melted and suddenly he found himself dropping down to the ground.

Gibbs must have been shocked to see him and went to pull him up, when Tony put a hand up.

“Don’t...please...” Tony pleaded and the realization dawned on Gibbs. He stepped back and nodded.

“Thank you...Gibbs, I have been in love with you for a long time, ever since we met and after what happened today, I-I...” Tony struggled to get the words out.

Gibbs dropped to his knees and pulled Tony’s face up and kissed him fully on the lips.

“Once you’re mine, you stay mine,” Gibbs growled.

Tony chucked; look what happened to them. He didn’t stay his and now Tony was living in New York away from him.

Tony squeezed the bridge of his nose. Mac reminded him of Gibbs. They were similar yet so different. Mac and Gibbs were both in the Marines; they both lost a wife. Although, Gibbs married 3 times after that and look how that worked out. Mac stayed single but Tony knew that Mac reverted inside himself and pushed everyone away for a long time. It was only recently that Mac began to come out and be the old Mac that he was before his wife died. What made him come out, Don didn’t say. Gibbs...well, he did things his way. Mac did things by the book. Mac allowed everyone on the team to have their say. Gibbs had to be pushed by Ducky or Abby to give the rest of the team a chance.

Tony breathed heavily. He couldn’t think of Gibbs this way...it wasn’t Mac’s fault. He had to get Gibbs out of his mind. He couldn’t let Gibbs pull him back. Tony wanted to make an impression on the team here and if he kept thinking about Gibbs or the team back in D.C, he won’t be able to cope very well.

Suddenly, Tony knew what to do. He had to submit to someone or he would explode.
