“You’re studying that hard.”  They were eating breakfast at a table on their deck.

“It’s a letter.”

“You don’t say.”

Gil looked up and laughed.  “It’s from Paris.”

“In Texas?”

“No…France.  Does everything for you begin and end in Texas?”

“There’s a Paris in Texas; why’ve you got a letter from France?”

“It’s a job offer.  Taking a seminar at the Sorbonne, no less.”

“Wow.”  Nick was impressed and horrified at the same time.  France was a helluva lot further away than Texas.

“Hey, don’t worry, I’m not going.”

And Nick hated it when Gil could read his mind…and he did it often; he really must try and be less transparent.

“Don’t say that; if it’s a good offer then you should go…how long is it for?”

Nick also hated it when Gil made up his own mind like that, without consulting him.

“Too long to be away from you.”

“Come on…details.”

“Three months.”

“You should go, I mean the Sorbonne is one of the greats isn’t it, up there with Harvard and Yale?”

“Not going.”

“Gil, don’t you think I can cope without you being here…you go and I can come visit you.  The time will go real fast.”

Gil took off his glasses and chewed on one of the arms for a few moments before he looked across at Nick, and spoke.

“Nick, honey; I’m sure you’ll cope, you always do, but have you considered me?  I cannot imagine what it would be like to be away from you for that long.  It was bad enough those four weeks at Quantico, and that was in this country.  I thought the whole point of us being together and living together, was exactly that…together, not separated by five or six thousand miles.”

Nick was lost for words.  Gil was absolutely right; he hadn’t considered Gil’s side of it, at all.  He smiled across at Gil, realising that even after more than three years together, he learned new things about the man all the time.  He guessed he’d go on learning for a long time.

“I’m sorry, babe, I look on you as…I don’t now, as kinda independent.  I lose sight of the fact that you’re one half of us, as well as being Gil Grissom.”  Nick laughed.  “You know, I think I’m still a bit awe struck by you.   Man, you are Gil Grissom and you love me!”

Gil laughed along with Nick.  “When you walk into a room and look at me, I think, ‘he’s my partner, he loves me’!  You know what, Nicky?  I hope it’s always like that, and I’m not going to Paris.”

Nick leaned towards Gil

“How about we go fool around and celebrate you not going to Paris…”
