“I see what people meant now, about your super hero complex,” Riley says as she tucks her vest away in her locker.

“Yeah?” Nick asks, pulling his own locker open. “And what was that?”

Riley smiles. “That you’ve always got to go after the bad guy yourself and draw your gun before really thinking about the risks.”

“Do cops really think about it before they draw their weapon?” Nick shrugs.

“But they’re cops, not CSIs,” Riley replies and Nick frowns. “Hey,” she says, hands up, “I’m not judging you, just speaking my mind. I like that you’re so involved.”

“I used to be a cop,” Nick muses and Riley laughs.

“That doesn’t surprise me.” She watches as Nick hangs up his vest, gaze travelling over the pictures taped to the door. “You have a big family.”

Nick smiles, looking at the many pictures of him and his parents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Many of them are from last Christmas and a couple from the fourth of July.

“Yeah,” he says. “Christmas is the most expensive time of year for me. I find myself praying for liquor store robberies just so I can clock some overtime.”

Riley laughs, the sound slowly slipping away as she spots an interesting picture tucked in the top corner. She tilts her head to the side and points up at it. “Isn’t that Greg?”

The picture in question is one from last summer. It was the hottest day of the year so far, and Greg thought the only way to cool down would be to attack Nick with a bucket of water while he was washing the SUV in his drive way. The picture is taken at arms length, Greg’s arm to be more precise. They’re in soaking wet t-shirts and Greg’s got a grin on his face from ear to ear as Nick presses a firm kiss to his cheek.

Nick licks his dry lips and nods. “Yeah, that’s Greg.”

Riley looks intrigued and she’s smirking in a way that makes Nick feel uneasy.

“You look…comfortable.”

“Uh…” Nick trails, suddenly stuck for words.

Not a lot of people know about his and Greg’s relationship. Of course the grave shift team knows and one or two people in the lab, but it’s not exactly common knowledge. They don’t let on much at work because Ecklie had to be offered everything but a Roles Royce to not fire one of them, so they’re trying not to do anything to piss him off (though he still sneers a little every time he sees one of them).

Nick’s not embarrassed about his relationship, but Greg is the first serious same-sex relationship Nick’s been in and he’s still getting used to that feeling of not knowing how people are going to react when you tell them.

He opens his mouth to say something, because he’s aware of how long he’s been stood there with a blank expression, but doesn’t get the chance.

The door to the locker room swings open quickly and Greg comes storming in, looking so pissed he doesn’t even flinch when the door thwacks back against the frame loudly.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Greg says, shoving at Nick’s shoulder a little. He doesn’t even notice Riley standing there.

“Greg-” Nick manages to get out.

“No,” Greg interrupts, finger pointed directly at Nick. “You put yourself in unnecessary danger again, Nick. Y’know one of these days your luck just might run out, and then what am I going to do? What will the team do? Don’t you think we’ve lost enough people?”

“Greggo,” Nick says quietly, reaching out to touch Greg’s elbow. “Calm down, lets talk about this.”

“I can’t talk to you now,” Greg replies, walking back a couple steps. “I’m too mad at you.” He turns and opens the door, stopping before he walks out to turn back to Nick. “You’re sleeping on the couch tonight.”

When Greg’s gone, Nick turns back to Riley with pink cheeks. She’s not smirking anymore, instead her lips are pressed tightly together, but her eyes are soft and kind.

“He’ll calm down soon,” she says softly and Nick sighs and sinks down on to the bench.

“He’s been so tetchy these passed few weeks,” he says, running his hand through his short hair. “I knew he’d be pissed off about the cop thing.”

“Your team has been through a lot,” Riley nods as she sits down on the bench next to Nick. “I know Greg and Sara were close, so it can’t be easy for him. And then with Warrick…” she trails.

“Yeah,” Nick whispers. He looks so lost that Riley reaches out and squeezes Nick’s shoulder. Nick smiles weakly. “Thanks.”

Riley smiles back. “No problem. Y’know, now that I think about it, you and Greg do make a pretty sweet couple.”

Nick laughs. “Really?”

“Yeah. I can see how you two would work together. Though from what I’ve seen, Greg’s gotta be a handful.”

Laughing again, Nick looks away and bobs his head. “Oh yeah. But, I can have my moments too. I think we balance each other out. Believe it or not I used to be even more trigger happy before Warrick passed and before Greg…”

“And now you realise what you have to lose?” Riley asks.

“Something like that, yeah. There’s still a cop in me, though, and I really don’t think sometimes when I see a bad guy run – I just gotta go after them.”

“Look, I know I haven’t been here long but I can see that you’re a great CSI, Nick. You’re just passionate about what you do, and that’s not a bad thing.”

“Thank you,” Nick smiles softly.

“Though if I were you, I’d definitely leave the chasing to the cops and avoid any more nights on the couch.”

At the end of shift, Riley expects to find Nick in the locker room. He’s not there though and neither is Greg. She saw Nick about fifteen minutes ago, still looking like he was heading home to a night on the couch.

She puts away her lab clothes and pull out her jacket, collecting her purse and car keys from the top shelf.

Its dark outside and sun rise is still a fair few hours away. Riley’s parked at the back of the lot, like she always does, and she twirls her keys around her index finger as she walks. There’s a bottle of wine and a new DVD waiting for her at home and she can’t wait to settle down on her comfy couch.

As she approaches her car, she hears feet dragging through the gravel. She stops quickly, turning towards the noise. There’s a black SUV a few empty spaces up from her and as she walks a little further she sees two figures pushing at each other. She steps forward but almost instantly stop again, because they’re not pushing each other, more like groping each other.

Nick’s pushed against the boot of his car and Greg’s got his hands in Nick’s hair as they kiss hungrily. Nick’s arms are tight around Greg’s waist, keeping their bodies close. When Nick gasps as Greg’s lips move to his neck, he sees Riley grinning at them.

Riley raises her hand to wave and Nick waves back on one swift motion before grabbing the back of Greg’s jacket. Laughing to herself, Riley continues to her car.

“So, am I still on the couch?” Nick asks as Greg kisses at his throat.

“Mmm,” Greg replies, humming against Nick’s skin as he rolls his hips against Nick’s body.

“I’ll take that as a no,” Nick grins.
