Title: The Surprise
Author: CSI_Nightowl
Pairing: David/Nick
Rating: PG
Warnings: slash
Spoilers: Post Dog Eat Dog
Summary: Nick has a surprise for David.
Disclaimer: I don't own CSI or its characters. If I did there'd be much more Nick, David and Greg screen time.
A/N: This came to me after watching Dog Eat Dog for the first time (also first time I've seen the infamous mustache other then in pictures, but that's a different story.) Hope this isn't too stupid. I just needed to write something light after "Monsters"

David opened his front door and went inside. He was so glad to be home. Today had been awful. He could still smell the evidence he had to process. Sometimes he hated his job. He glanced around the living room then headed to the kitchen. Frowning because he couldn't find his lover, he went towards the bedroom. The door was closed. It was never closed unless they had company. He started to open it when he heard a vaguely familiar sound.

"Nick, you in here?" he said as he opened the door.

"Right here, David."

David smiled at the man lying on the bed reading. "Why was the door closed?"

"I didn't want to spoil the surprise." Nick sat up and motioned for him to come sit beside him.

"What surprise?" David asked as he sat down on the other's lap instead of the proffered seat.

Nick grinned. "You've had a bad day, haven't you?"

David sighed. "Sorry I snapped at you and Sara earlier."

"Processing the stomach contents got to you, huh?"

"Please don't even mention that. Ugh! I know now why Mom always told me to chew my food up good."

Nick laughed. "Catherine told me about your clothespin."

"Laugh all you want too, Nick. I'm going to go fix me a peanut butter sandwich."

"Okay, okay. I'm sorry I laughed. I would have liked to see you though. I bet you were adorable." Nick held him tightly so he couldn't get up. "Hey wait a minute; we don't have any peanut butter."

"Yeah well, I'll have to buy some tomorrow."

"I'll go with you and get some hot dogs." Nick smirked.

"Okay no peanut butter or hot dogs, deal?"

"Deal."

"Now what was this about a surprise?"

"It's over there." Nick pointed to their dresser.

"Nick" was all David could say as he stared at his surprise.

"Do you like them?" Nick was suddenly nervous about his spontaneous purchase.

David watched the hamsters going around on the little wheel inside the cage. Nick wasn't sure what to make of his silence.

"You got me hamsters." David stated the obvious.

"I can take them back if you don't like them."

"Like them? I love them. Thank you."

"When I saw the way you face lit up today when you were telling us about the ones you had growing up I just had to get them."

"It's the nicest thing anybody's ever done for me." David turned and put his arms around Nick. "How will I ever thank you?" he smiled.

"I'm sure I can think of something." Nick chuckled.

"Wait, first I've got to take care of these guys." David picked up the cage and carried it into the living room.

"If I'd know they were going to keep you from performing your husbandly duties I would never have bought them."

"I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. Now did you get them any food?"

"No, I thought we could starve them to death then give them to Grissom as a gift." Nick deadpanned.

David glared till Nick finally relented and retrieved the hamster food.

"We'll leave them here tonight and tomorrow we can decide where to keep them."

Nick tried to hide his amusement.

"You think I'm acting like a fool, don't you?"

"No David, I love seeing you this way. Look how much you've relaxed since you saw them."

David nodded as he moved toward Nick. "The hamsters are nice but I'd much rather relax with you."

Nick grinned as he closed the distance between them and pressed his lips to David's. They stood there lost in the kiss until the CSI's phone rang.

"Don't answer it." David said breathlessly.

"I have too." Nick frowned as he said hello.

David leaned against him and silently cursed Grissom. Sometimes he hated Nick's job.

"I'm sorry babe but there's a db on the Strip." Nick apologized as he put his phone away.

"Fine." David sighed. "Get me all worked up then leave."

"Well, now you can play with the hamsters."

"It's not the same."

"I would hope not." Nick gave him another kiss. "I'll be back as soon as I can. Love you."

"Love you too. Be careful."

David watched him drive away before turning back to his new pets. He sat and watched them for a while.

"Okay, here's the deal. I'll keep your cage clean and feed you if you agree not to run away."

David shook his head. He still couldn't believe Sara had suggested his mother had done something with his hamsters. Damn her for putting the idea into his head. He picked up the phone and dialed the familiar number.

"As if Mom would do something like that." He huffed as the phone rang.

"Hello."

"Hi Mom. You'll never guess what Nick gave me."

"What honey?"

"Two hamsters."

Silence

"Mom?"
