'Til death us do part...? (The St Valentine's Day Massacre)

Report

Las Vegas Review-Journal entry for 15.02.07.

'......Dr Gilbert Grissom and Mr Nicholas Stokes, Criminalists with LVPD were both murdered in Las Vegas early yesterday. While they were investigating a supposedly straightforward crime scene, a hidden explosive device was detonated, killing both men at the scene.

Dr Grissom was a world renowned Forensic Entomologist, while Mr Stokes was a Fibre Analysis Specialist...

A source close to the men said, '...they were a close couple, and had been together for a number of years - they seemed devoted to one another - I suppose going together is a sort of blessing in disguise, and on St Valentine's Day.'

Details

Of course, the actual details were far more gruesome than the (reputable) newspapers would report. In deference to the remaining Graveyard staff, the Day shift completed the evidence gathering at the devastated scene.

The evidence allowed them to conclude that Gil had been crouched down almost over the suitcase containing the bomb and that Nick had been standing to one side facing Gil and the bomb.

Gil had been blown to bits, literally - fairly large bits since he was a substantial man - but suffice it to say he was taken from the scene in (many) more than one body bag. Nick survived - okay wrong word, but you get the drift - intact. The enormity of the injuries to both men ensured that their deaths had been instantaneous - so, no undue suffering from the physical injuries - but did they know that it was a bomb and that it was about to explode in their faces...?

Afterwards

"......er...Gil...?"

"Mmmmm?"

"'...there's...ummm something funny goin' on here...."

"I know Nicky, I'm trying to assess the situation."

"Riiiggghhttt...see what the evidence is telling ya... What is it telling you?"

"Well Nicky, perhaps you could describe exactly what you are...feeling right now?"

"It's some seriously weird shit, man.... I can hear ya, feel ya, inside and out and it's a...well...it's a fabulous feeling......but Gil?"

"Mmmmm."

"Well...... I can't see ya.....and Gil......I can't see me but I'm here...d' ya get it, man?"

"I do Nicky, I do indeed, because it is exactly how I would describe myself. In fact I would go so far as to say I have never, NEVER, felt better!"

"You're right darlin'...and I ain't never felt my love for you as much as I do at this very moment. Is that crazy? Where are we Gil?"

"In all honesty I have no idea but I don't seem to be bothered at all. Let's look at the evidence, shall we? What is the last thing you remember before this...state?"

"Errrrrrr......Oh, I know we were at a crime scene, it was a B&E - no problem. And you, man, you went down on your haunches and that ass of yours was just asking to be grabbed and I said, 'Man, that ass of yours is indecent, it deserves to be grabbed.' You said........uh uh Gil........."

"I said, 'This looks suspiciously like an explosive device, we'd better get...!' That's as far as I got isn't it?"

"That's how I remember it......we're...we're dead aren't we?"

"The evidence does seem to point us in that direction, but I would prefer some sort of proof. We could, I suppose, have sustained very serious injuries and be lying unconscious in a hospital...but how do we explain this curious telepathy and er, well... well...this blissful feeling?"

"Something's gotta have happened surely...wow...what was that?"

"Nicky baby it's you, I'm sooo glad you're here, you'll have a great time, it's great!!" what sounded like a young woman's voice to Gil caused Nick to become incredibly excited.

"Pamela Sue, PAMELA SUE, it's you, it's great to hear from you......you look.... Well you feel, anyway, fabulous!"

"I am Nicky, I am," Pamela Sue gushed, somewhat.

"Pammie, sweetie, where are we, what's goin' on gal...I know you passed on like twenty years ago?"

"This is the afterlife Nicky - you must have just died and I've been sent to tell you about it - you'll get used to it, you do what you want, go where you want, meet who you want, you just don't have a body." Pamela Sue was sounding more serious now.

"Errrr, this is heaven then, or what?"

"No, there's no heaven or hell there just 'is'. Mind you, I don't know what happens to nasty people 'cause I ain't never met one at all, but then I don't go looking out for them, so maybe they all hang together!" She laughed.

Gil decided to get in on this act, "Pamela Sue, I'm Gil...." he started but Pamela Sue interrupted.

"I know, I know everything about you, and Nick, if you think about me you'll know all about me as well - it's how it works."

Gil thought for a moment and saw Pamela Sue in the auto wreck that took her life - well her earthly life anyway, and then saw her with Nicky when they were young teenagers in high school, he guessed, and how gorgeous was a young Nicky!

Pamela Sue barged into his thoughts, "Oh you, thinking about Nicky like that - mind you I chased him for years, now I know why he wouldn't let me catch him! Anyway guys, I'm off, people to see and places to go, just think of me and I'll be with you, now you just have a good time in paradise!" She was gone as quickly as she'd arrived.

"Well Nicky, looks like we're going to have to make the best of a bad job."

"Well Gil, I think we're goin' to have to make the best of the what must be the greatest job there is - I always thought we'd be together forever, babe, and it looks like it's gonna happen!"

"Not if you persist in calling me 'babe' it isn't."

Nick wasn't the least bit bothered by Gil's pronouncement 'cause he could feel the love, man, he could feel the love.........

Coda

The team drifted apart - it seemed that Gil and Nick had been the glue that had kept them together - or that being together reminded them of their loss. Catherine took over the day shift. Warrick resigned and went on the road for a while. Sara returned to San Francisco and never went back to Las Vegas. Greg transferred to the FBI in Quantico and eventually persuaded Warrick to go back to work - he did - in Dallas. Sofia left the PD and took a high flying security job at the Bellagio. Jim retired and returned to Jersey and then Florida - to keep his old bones warm.

There wasn't a day that passed that each of them didn't remember Gil and Nick and something they'd said or done, or perhaps the looks the two men had shared when they thought no-one else was looking. They all hoped that Gil and Nick were together somewhere............

The End
