Note: Just a nice li'l oneshot/vignette type.

David Phillips never thought he'd end up with Nick, never thought he'd want to end up with someone like Nick. Nick was everything he wasn't. Good-looking, svelte, athletic and had a reputation for being charming with the ladies. David knew the Nick-types and despised them for their superficiality and nastiness. They were the jocks of the school, the ones who called him "four-eyes" and "chubby cubby", among others, all through high school; the ones who always made sure he got picked last for team games during phys ed classes.

When David first transferred into the LV coroner dept., he quickly dismissed Nick as another one of those dumb jocks and kept his distance as best as he could. But after some time (not that long, really), David realised that those mega-watt film-star smiles Nick flashed were genuine, and that Nick was really just being friendly when he chatted with David, not setting him up for a mocking or smackdown or anything like that.

Being in the morgue most of the time, David never really witnessed it firsthand, but had heard stories of Nick empathising with the victim and their families. The more he knew the real Nick, the more he could envision him doing so. David came to realise that Nick Stokes was a very special guy. He had the looks of a jock; but without their idiocy and cruelty. He had the brains of a good criminalist and, most importantly, a big heart of gold that he opened to the victims and their loved ones. Oh, and Nick was gay too.

David always felt a pang of guilt and shame when he thinks of how quick he was to stereotype Nick when they first worked together. Luckily, being with Nick never allowed him to linger on his guilt for too long, cause almost every moment he spent with Nick was like a blunt force trauma of happiness to his heart (coroner's romance analogy).

Their time spent together was more diversed than it was for most other couples- gay couples included. One night they'd be snuggled in the couch watching a slasher-gore horror flick, while David schooled Nick on the appreciation of the finer details of classic gore and gushed about how rare it was to find realistic arterial spray in said films. The next day they'd be engaged in some sport activity -- Nick's idea of course. So far David has gone hiking and trekking with Nick, and shot some hoops with Nick and Warrick. He's still working up the courage to go paragliding with Nick though. David's favourite sporting memory with Nick, by far, happened early one morning after they both got off shift at the baseball batting cage. There was no one else around that early, and Nick wrapped his strong arms around David as he taught him how to grip the bat correctly, all the while whispering encouraging words into David's ear like, "That's it, baby! Easy does it!"

Of course, almost every day at work they got to see each other a little, mostly when Nick came to the morgue to get autopsy results on his case. David looked forward to seeing Nick, even more than he loved his favourite part of his job: cleaning out a skull. Somehow, the sight of Nick at the morgue just took the edge off the sometimes harsh, unfair treatment Dr. Al doled out on him.
