Six months had gone by since Yelina had been murdered. The jury came back with a guilty plea, and Rick Stetler had been sentenced to twenty-five years to life. Horatio just watched him with cold eyes as they lead him away in cuffs. He had walked out of the courthouse with a smile on his face. Sometimes the justice system worked perfectly.

It had been a long day and as he walked towards his Hummer, his eyes caught a familiar face. He wondered what he was doing back in town. Horatio hadn't seen Detective Bernstein since he left the force about two years ago. If the rumors were right, he had been very close to Speed. The redhead frowned. He and Speed had been in a relationship for over a year, and the younger man never mentioned how close he had been with the detective.

He slipped into the Hummer and pulled out of the lab parking lot. It had to be a coincidence. Bernstein had family in Miami.

"Speed."

The young man turned when he heard his name and stared in shock. "Michael."

Bernstein smiled. "How have you been?"

"Good." Speed smiled in return. "What brings you back to Miami?"

"Family business." He shrugged. "I figured while I was here I would stop by and say hi, maybe get some drinks?"

The Trace expert frowned and backed up. "Not a good idea."

"Hey, we're old friends. What's wrong?" Michael stepped forward.

"I'm seeing someone," Speed explained. "I just don't think it would be good if we went out."

"It's just drinks between friends," the ex-Detective stated. "This guy doesn't let you go out with friends."

"It's not that." The young man frowned. "You're more than just a friend, and we had a rough patch recently... it's just not a good idea."

"Who is this guy? He sounds controlling," Michael said.

Speed sighed in frustration running a hand through his hair. "It's not like that. I love him more than life... Okay, one drink but not tonight. Are you still in town this weekend?"

"I fly out on Monday." Bernstein eyed his ex-lover.

"Saturday at that Bistro we used to go to, downtown." Speed smiled at him. "We can catch up."

"Speed..." He laid a hand on the young man's arm. "Who are you seeing?"

"See you Saturday." Speed pulled away and moved to his bike, with a quick wave he put on his helmet and drove off.

Michael Bernstein didn't like his ex-lover's reaction. He was determined to find out what was going on.

~*~

"Hey Bernstein, what brings you to Miami." Eric smiled at the detective.

"Speed actually." Michael stated watching the CSI's expression.

The Cuban tensed. "What do you want with Speed? You two broke up when you decided to transfer to Houston."

"A mistake on my part, I should have taken him with me," Bernstein stated. "I came to see if he would..."

"He's seeing someone," the young man pointed out. "And very much devoted to him."

"He sounds controlling. He hesitated when I asked if he wanted to go for drinks," the ex-detective commented.

"Come on, your ex shows up. You don't go out to drinks with your ex and not tell the one you're with." Eric smirked. "Not if you want to stay off the couch."

"Who's he seeing?" He asked.

Eric paused. "Not my place to say."

"Such a big mystery." Michael's voice was full of sarcasm.

"Look, you're a nice guy, but you left. Speed's moved on leave it at that." Eric picked up his folders and left the break room.

Bernstein was ready to leave when Calleigh walked into the room. "Hey Texan boy."

He smiled at her. "Calleigh, you didn't warn me about the hot humid summers."

"Nothing compared to Miami." She grinned. "What brings you to Miami?"

"Catching up with old friends," Michael said.

The blonde frowned. "You're not thinking of hooking back up with Speed are you? Cause you know he's seeing someone and it's the real deal."

"So I've been told," he muttered.

"Just so you know." She patted his arm. "How long you in town?"

"A week," he said. "Then back to Texas. So I heard about Yelina..."

"Tragic isn't it. Stetler just snapped and killed her." Calleigh shook her head. "From what we pieced together, she finally left him after one too many hits, and he refused to let her go."

"That doesn't sound like Stetler." Bernstein paused. "I mean, he was an ass but to kill her."

"It shocked us all." Calleigh shrugged. "It's always hard when it's one of our own." She looked down at her page. "That's my DNA; I'll see you before you leave?"

"Yeah I'll be around. Want to chat with Horatio and Alexx before I leave," he said.

"Good, see you later then." Michael watched her leave the lab. "What the hell is going on?"

~*~

"Hey." Bernstein leaned over to give Speed a small kiss on the cheek.

Speed pulled away. "Glad you could make it." He motioned toward the seat across from. "Tell me about Houston."

"Lonely." Michael sat down, eying his ex. "I miss you."

Tim looked down slightly. "A guy like you. You should have no problem finding someone."

"There is only one I want." He laid his hand over Speed's.

Speed pulled his hand back and stood up. "If this is why you wanted to talk I think I should be leaving."

Bernstein followed him out of the Bistro. "What is wrong with you?"

"Me?" The younger man turned around. "You come back after two years and expect to pick up where you left off. I've moved on."

"Who is this guy?" He demanded.

"Look, just drop it and go back to Texas." Speed moved away from him towards his bike.

Michael grabbed his arm and turned him around. "Speed, you're acting weird. Is this guy abusing you?"

"NO!" Speed pulled his arm out of Bernstein's grasp. "He loves me. I would give my life for him. He's everything to me. I can't live without him."

The ex-detective stepped back in shock. "Do you hear yourself. He's got you under his thumb..."

"Horatio isn't like that!" Speed snapped. "So just leave, you're good at that."

"You're seeing Caine." Michael stared at him. "I swore he was after Yelina...."

Speed's voice hardened. "Well she's not around is she?"

Bernstein stepped back and stared at his ex. "Speed..."

"Go back to Texas; it was a mistake to see you." He backed up away from his ex-lover.

"What has he done to you?" Michael followed him. "You're not the Speed I know. What ever he's done, I can help."

"You don't understand." Speed looked down. "He's my world. I can't live without him...nothing gets between us...nothing, no one..."

The detective stared at his ex. "Speed did you do something to Yelina?"

Speed's looked back up at Bernstein, his eyes cold. "Just go back to Texas."

"Not without you." He shook his head. "What has Horatio done to you? My God, Speed..."

"He loves me." Speed's eyes flashed. "More than I can say for you. You just walked out the door. Decided your career was more important than me..."

"I do love you. I came here to take you back to Texas." He reached for Speed.

A gunshot echoed out and Bernstein fell to the ground dead, a bullet hole in his head. Speed stumbled back in shock, eyes wide.

Horatio eased out of the prone position and quickly dismantled the sniper rifle, slipping it back into its case. He had no worry of it being traced, the bullet was designed to smash on impact making it untraceable, plus the rifle wasn't even in the system, he had made sure of it. He slipped inside the stairwell, quickly stripping out of the camouflage outfit, and putting on his trade mark suit. The redhead moved quickly down the stairs to the basement of the hotel, tossing the clothes into the incinerator and exited out the back door into the alley. Slipping on his glasses he walked causally the few blocks to the parking garage where the Hummer was located.

By the time he got to the vehicle he had been paged, 'situation downtown – Speed.' He slipped the case under the back seat, with a mental note to send it back to its owner with a thank you note. He eased into the driver's seat and exited the parking structure and headed to the scene of the crime taking the long way around.

Pulling up, he could see Tripp trying to calm a frantic Speed. Alexx was already doing what she did best, and it seemed Eric and Calleigh were already working the scene. He cooled his features and put on his best Lieutenant Horatio Caine look and stepped out of the Hummer.

"Speed...." The redhead asked, head tilted sunglasses in hand.

Speed turned and looked at him, dark eyes meeting blue, he visible relaxed. "Horatio...."

~*~

"Speed, what happened?" Tripp glanced over as Alexx removed the body.

"We were talking..." He looked at the detective his voice faltering. "And then he was down."

"Tripp, can we do this another time?" Horatio stood next to Speed. He looked over at the Texan detective.

He shook his head. "I got enough. Calleigh and Eric are investigating, it looks like a sniper shot."

The redhead nodded. "They'll keep me updated. I've got to call his Lieutenant in Texas to see if he had any enemies that may have wanted Bernstein dead."

"It's tragic." Tripp shook his head. He patted Speed's shoulder. "I know the two of you were close..."

"We lost contact when he left." Speed stared at the blood pool on the ground. "This was the first I had seen him."

"What did he want?" Tripp asked.

"Catch up..." Speed blinked and looked up at him. "Truthfully, Frank, he wanted to get back together."

Frank nodded. "That explains the witness saying the two of you were arguing."

"I said no and he wouldn't take it for an answer." Speed shook his head. "Then he was dead."

"Go home; let Horatio take care of you." Tripp smiled at the redhead. "I'll keep you posted."

"Thanks Frank." Horatio took Speed's arm gently. "Come on Speed."

"I..." He hesitated before letting Horatio pull him away.

"It's over." The redhead's voice was low and soft.

Calleigh squatted down and looked over the roof edge. "This is the place."

Eric sighed. "I warned him."

"As did I." Calleigh stood up.

"Callie..."

"We talked about this, Eric." She looked over at him. "We do what we need to do."

"As if we'll find anything except what was left for us to find." The Cuban looked around the rooftop.

The blonde ballistics expert grabbed her kit. "Lets get to work."

Horatio moved his lover through the house towards their bedroom. Speed was still in shock. He had hated traumatizing him, but this way his lover wouldn't be a suspect. The brunette just let Horatio strip him down and move him into the bathroom. Silently Horatio prepared the shower then stripped out of his own clothes.

The warm water cascaded around them washing off the grime of the day. The redhead grabbed the apple-cinnamon body wash; he loved how it smelled on his lover. He poured some on the cloth and began washing Speed from head to toe. As he moved up his strong legs, he heard a soft moan. Horatio's touches turned from simple strokes to a soft caress. He ran his hands up the muscled thighs and over the firm round ass. Making sure his fingers were soaped up he slipped two into his lover's entrance.

"H..." Speed moaned as he braced his hands on the shower wall.

"I got you." Horatio whispered as he kissed the back of his neck. "No one..." He pushed into the warm body taking his lover in one stroke. "No one comes between us."

"Yours," The brunette moaned as he pushed back. "Please H...love you."

Horatio pulled out and thrust back in, pulling a deep groan from his lover. He let his control slip and began to pound into him, claiming Speed.

"Yes, oh God... yes... Horatio harder... yours only yours..." Speed braced himself taking each hard delicious thrust. He lost control when Horatio reached around and grasped his hard erection stroking it, his thumb caressing gently over the head. He yelled out his lover's name as he spurted semen all over Horatio's hand and the shower wall.

Horatio groaned as Speed tightened around him and with one last, hard thrust he groaned out Speed's name and came hard. For a moment the two stood collapsed against the walls, regaining their composure. Horatio pulled out first making sure Speed was alright. Assured his lover was fine, he finished cleaning them up and then turned off the shower. Drying both of them off, he got Speed into some sleep pants, before putting on a pair himself and shuffled him into the bed.

He turned on the radio, the noise softly playing in the background. He knew the noise would calm Speed down. Horatio held him close, "I'll never let you go."

"You watch over me, protect me from others and even myself," the younger man whispered as he laid his head on Horatio's chest.

Horatio cocked his head and listened to the words from the song playing. "Listen..."

It doesn't matter what people say
And it doesn't matter how long it takes
Believe in yourself and you'll fly, high
And it only matters how true you are
Be true to yourself and follow your heart

So I won't give up,
No, I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

"I love you." Speed curled into his lover's arms.

Horatio held him close, "I love you too."

The two fell into a content sleep, knowing nothing - nothing would get between them.

~ The End ~

~ 'Someone's Watching Over Me' – Hilary Duff ~

I found myself today
Oh I found myself and ran away
But something pulled me back
A voice of reason I forgot I had
All I know is you're not here to say
What you always used to say
But it's written in the sky tonight

Chorus:

So I won't give up,
No, I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

Seem that ray of light and its shining on my destiny
Shining all the time
And I won't be Afraid
To follow everywhere it's taking me
All I know is yesterday is gone
And right now I belong
To this moment
To my dreams

Chorus:

So I won't give up,
No, I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

It doesn't matter what people say
And it doesn't matter how long it takes
Believe in yourself and you'll fly, high
And it only matters how true you are
Be true to yourself and follow your heart

Chorus:

So I won't give up,
No, I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me
