I can’t hear my own voice anymore, it used to tell me to stop, turn around and I would. But I invited her here, what did I expect other than that she is the only voice I hear now.

“We have a 3:15, don’t look you will make it obvious!”

It’s dangerous to listen to her but it’s clearly out of my control. "You have something there..." I use my finger obove her lip to wipe the crumb.

"Thanks!"

I nod and muse at the simple gesture. I can’t decipher between truth or fiction, lust and love or heart from head and I have lost any reasoning.

“You looked!” she interrupts me train of thought as indeed she caught me looking at the 3:15, who I recognised.

“When I get back to the lab you better have a good excuse sidle!”

I can’t speak for saying too much, I only say what I need to, words with no meaning that are dull, empty and cold sometimes even spiteful.

“You’ve gone all quiet on me, what’s wrong?”

I will not tell her, not yet. ”Huh, Oh nothing, just day dreaming!”

“The result of three shifts in a row I suspect. Listen you day dream, I need to go use the rest room.”

She touches my shoulder as she leaves. Now I am cold, everything is numb, waiting… waiting…

“Sorry I took a while, a kid had lost his mum, turned out she was in the toilet still.”

Now my shoulders are heavy with the weight of her eyes on me. How long can I keep this up befoe she...

“So, you no what I realised, we’re about to pay the bill and you haven’t told me why we are here yet?”

My mouth is dry and my fingers desperate “Right…” I can’t tell her, I can’t!

“Sara? Why you looking at me like that?”

Everything stops, all I hear is her, nothing else matters, she wants me to say it “Sofia…I…” i pause.

“What is it?”

Suddenly a third voice interrupts us “Excuse me ladies, can I join you?”

“Greg?” She is as surprised as I am.

My eyes water as I face the light from the window, I can’t let him see my eyes. It feels like only seconds passed when she puts a warm hand on my arm, it makes me warm, it makes me turn to her.

“Greg said he’d see us back at the lab, I guess he saw you turn and look at him!”

I guess he did… she must have said something to convince him to leave us.

“So what were you going to say?”

Her hand moves away from my arm and suddenly I’m cold again. “Nothing, it doesn’t matter.” I tell myself it doesn’t matter, another day another hour, or minute, what will it changed?

“I might be wrong, but I think I know what this is, why you asked me to meet you for lunch to tell me something, the something that's suddenly nothing!”

My palms are sweaty and my eyes are sharp.

“You have a thing for Greg?”

I let out the breath that's been clinging to my lungs and shack my head.

“Nick?”

“No”

“Me?”

My heart stops. I say nothing… I hear her voice, nothing else.

“It’s me?”

I nod fearful of her reaction but she smiles and puts her hand on my arm again, only this time she doesn’t pull away, not until we leave together.
