The Doctor's dark eyes widened in shock as he pressed his ear to Jamie's chest; he couldn't believe what he was hearing. Was he imagining things, some trick of his mind making him hear what he wanted to just because he knew that it was what Jamie would want?

Or was this real some magic that had been conjured out of his own desperation and grief? Had fate decided to smile kindly on the two of them and grant his lover what he wanted most in all the world? It didn't seem possible, that it might actually be true.

There were two heartbeats under his ear. Two. It didn't seem as though it could possibly be true, but the Doctor was sure that his mind wasn't merely playing tricks on him. Jamie had achieved his dream. He had somehow become a Time Lord. His body was no longer human.

Frantically, the Doctor pressed his hand against his own chest, wondering if his Time Lord essence could somehow have transferred itself to his lover in the process of the Chameleon Arch doing its work. What if he was the one now trapped in a human body, with a Time Lord mind?

But he needn't have worried. His own two hearts were beating steadily; he was still a Time Lord, there was no change. There didn't seem to be any explanation for the miracle that had apparently taken place; he was left with several questions and no answers to any of them.

What did those questions matter, though, now that Jamie had been restored to him? The Doctor gathered his lover into his arms, almost sobbing with relief. It didn't matter if Jamie was a human, a Time Lord, or somewhere in between. He was here. He was alive.

They were both Time Lords now. The Doctor sat back on his heels, smoothing the hair back from Jamie's face, unable to believe what had just taken place. Not only had the Tardis brought his lover back, but she had somehow made him more than he had been before.

Would this make Jamie happy? When he woke up, would he be overjoyed to discover that he now had two hearts, that he was no longer trapped in the weakened vessel of a human body housing his Time Lord brain? Would his fears and worries finally be at an end?

The Doctor doubted that; there would always be complications in their lives that would get in the way of the two of them being completely happy. But Jamie had now apparently achieved what he wanted more than anything, and the Doctor could only hope that it would last.

Jamie, a Time Lord. He had never thought that it could happen, though he would have moved heaven and Earth to insure that it would. And now, quite unexpectedly, out of the blue, it had. This wasn't what he had thought would take place, but he was thankful that it had.

It burst upon the Doctor in a flash of insight that he was no longer the last Time Lord -- now that Jamie had gotten his heart's desire, his lover was the second Time Lord in the universe. Well, the third -- because the Master was still out there somewhere, as well.

That was something he didn't want to contemplate at the moment, the Doctor told him as he stroked his lover's face, waiting for Jamie to regain consciousness. They had enough to deal with at the moment without the Master coming into the equation.

Where did they go from here? The Doctor wasn't sure, but at least he had Jamie back. The bleak, empty void that had seemed to stretch before him had disappeared; Jamie was warm and alive, here in his arms, and he intended to make sure that his lover stayed by his side.

He was probably going to be overly protective for a while -- but anyone who had lost a loved one and seen them miraculously resurrected from the great beyond would feel the same way, he told himself. Jamie wouldn't blame him for being a bit paranoid.

He could feel Jamie stirring in his arms; the Doctor had no idea what he would tell his lover when Jamie finally awakened, but he knew that he would have to tell his lover about this unexpected miracle calmly and carefully. This wasn't something that he could simply blurt out all at once.

Would Jamie feel the difference? Would he be able to tell right away that he was no longer human, but a full-fledged Time Lord? So many questions, with no answers yet -- but when Jamie awakened, hopefully they would have all the answers that either of them needed.
