Jamie turned over onto his side with a contented sigh, snuggling close against the Doctor. It seemed that every time they made love lately, the Doctor became more aggressive, and Jamie was discovering that he liked having his lover take charge.

Of course, the Doctor always had so much on his mind that Jamie didn't mind being the more dominant partner in the bedroom. He knew that his lover had to get away from the worries that could weigh him down at times -- and sex was an excellent way to do that.

But with them, it wasn't just sex, Jamie told himself as he rested his head on the Doctor's shoulder and relaxed against the coolness of the pillows. There was so much more to what he felt for this man than just the pleasure of joining their bodies.

He had been in love with the Doctor from the first time he'd looked at the Time Lord; there had been such a strong attraction between the two of them that he couldn't have denied his feelings, even if he had wanted to. It had literally been love at first sight.

It wasn't only that the Doctor was beautiful, he told himself, a smile curving his lips. It was just as much his personality as his good looks that made him so extraordinary; it was his brilliant mind, his sense of fun, and his compassion, as well as the physical side of his being.

In those first few days of his existence, he had been so terrified that the Doctor was going to consign him to a life that he didn't want to live, a life that he hadn't been meant for. All he had wanted was to stay with the Doctor, to be near the man who would always hold his heart.

How long had they been lovers now? Jamie didn't know; he didn't remember what day it had been the first time they had made love, when he had still thought that the Doctor might leave him. Maybe he should; he should know the date that had changed his life forever.

He didn't really need to know, did he? he asked himself. No, he didn't; the only important thing was that he and the Doctor were together now, and that they always would be. It didn't matter when they had first come together, as long as they stayed that way.

There was more to being a lover than just being by someone's side, more than just loving them. Even as much as he loved the Doctor, Jamie knew that there was much more to their relationship than just their physical attraction, and the great love they bore each other.

There were so many little things that mattered more than he could have dreamed. Seeing the Doctor's smile when they were standing at the Tardis' console and their eyes met; feeling the touch of his lover's hand on his shoulder, sharing a glance that was full of a private meaning.

Their physical relationship was important to both of them, but there was so much more to being a lover than just that side of things. All of the little gestures were more important to him, the small things that so many people seemed to gloss over.

Could he have possibly been this content with anyone else, even if he truly cared about the person? Jamie didn't think so; he was with the only person he would ever want to be with, the only person who made him feel complete. He was right where he belonged -- and where he intended to stay.

"I love you," the Doctor whispered, his lips brushing gently across Jamie's forehead. Jamie smiled and snuggled closer to his lover, sliding his arms around the Time Lord's waist, wanting to stay right where he was forever, luxuriating in their embrace.

That wouldn't be possible, of course. They had so many other things to do in their lives besides make love -- and there would always be some kind of conflict that swirled throughout the universe that they had to stand up against. These moments couldn't go on for too long.

"I love you, too," he murmured, closing his eyes, sinking into the Doctor's embrace and feeling more content than he ever had. Yes, there was much more to being a lover than just the physical act. There was this meeting of hearts and souls, this feeling of utter completion.

As he drifted off to sleep, a smile curved his lips, and there was a feeling of complete contentment in his hearts. He was learning how to be a lover one step at a time, learning the most important aspect of loving someone. And so far, he was finding that it came naturally.
