Mick blinked in the early morning light, looking over at the man next to him. Josef slept on, apparently not realizing that he was being watched, looking as peaceful and innocent as a child. But what they had done last night was anything but childish.

Their first night together had been the most incredible night he'd ever spent with anyone. It was still so hard for him to believe that he was actually with Josef, that the man he loved actually felt the same way about him. It seemed too good to be true.

But it was true. Josef Kostan loved him.

How could he possibly have gotten so lucky? Having Josef as a lover had seemed like an impossible dream; finding out that this man had loved him and wanted him since their very first meeting, so many years ago, made his heart sing in a way that he hadn't thought possible.

Josef was all that he'd ever wanted, if he was honest with himself. He'd known it when he was with Simon, the only male lover he'd had before Josef; even when he was seeing Beth, Josef had always been the one who was first in his mind and his heart.

He'd dreamed about what this night would be like, his first time with Josef. And yet, in all of the fantasies he'd had, none of his dreams had even come close to the reality of what it had been like. He couldn't have imagined such a night i his wildest dreams.

Mick had known that Josef would be an incredible lover, even though he'd never been with a man before. He was the kind of man who would be good at anything he did -- and sex was no exception. Mick hadn't been disappointed in the slightest.

There was no way he could possibly have been disappointed in Josef. It didn't matter that the other man wasn't experienced in being with another man; Josef had responded to him in a way that no one else ever had, and their lovemaking had been, for Mick, sublime.

He knew that he'd satisfied Josef, as well. There had been no doubt of that from the soft words they'd shared in the afterglow of their lovemaking; it was more than obvious that Josef had enjoyed what they had done, and wanted more of it.

Would he still feel that way now? Mick couldn't help feeling somewhat anxious about what Josef would say when he woke up, how it would feel to be here with the man he loved on the morning after. This was going to be an awkward moment for both of them, he was sure.

But he could face that. He'd had to deal with awkwardness in relationships before, and he was sure that he and Josef would have their share of moments in their future when they were unsure of what to do or say. But they'd always manage to get through those times.

He loved Josef. And Josef loved him. That was really all that mattered.

Turning over onto his side, Mick reached out to gently brush a few errant strands of hair back from his sleeping lover's face, smiling as he did so. He was sure that he'd never seen anything so beautiful as the man he loved, lying here next to him, sleeping like a baby.

What would it be like to watch Josef waking up next to him? Should he exacerbate that waking, bend forward and brush his lips against Josef's, to wake his sleeping beauty up with a kiss? Or should he simply lie here and let his lover wake up on his own?

Mick decided that the second option would be the better one; after all, this was their first morning together. He didn't want to do anything that might feel strange to Josef -- and for all he knew, his lover wasn't used to waking up in bed next to someone.

Josef might very well not let anyone share his bed for an entire night. Mick knew that this man didn't have people spend the night in his apartment as a general rule; he would have sex with them, but they would rarely, if ever, stay for the entire night.

Josef had always been a very private person when it came to his sex life, but he'd talked about it now and then to Mick. It had never occurred to him that Josef might be sounding him out, trying to find out how he felt about certain issues, wanting to know his opinions.

But there was so much about this man that he didn't know, Mick told himself, even though they'd been friends for years. This was the first day of the rest of his life with Josef, getting to know each other much more intimately, on an entirely new level.

It was a life that he couldn't help but look forward to. This was what he'd wanted for so long, if he had been really honest with himself. Loving Josef was going to make him the happiest man in the universe. He had no doubt of that.

He would wake up like this next to Josef in bed every morning; or, if they'd elected to spend the night in the individual freezers that vampires had to sleep in, he would know that Josef was still right there beside him. They wouldn't have to spend nights apart.

No, that would only happen if they moved in together. And that hadn't happened yet.

Mick smiled inwardly, shaking his head at himself. His thoughts were traveling far into the future already, when this was only the beginning of their relationship. There was plenty of time to think about living with each other, entwining their lives in that way.

They had time. They had eternity. And he was determined to enjoy every moment of that eternity with this man. Now that he'd finally admitted to himself that he was in love with Josef, and he had the person he'd always wanted, he wasn't going to let that happiness slip away from him.

He'd never been this happy before in his entire life, not even when he was still human and Coraline had accepted his proposal when he'd asked her to marry him. Then, he'd thought that he was on top of the world, but that had been nothing compared to this feeling.

Josef was the person who he was meant to spend forever with. He'd known that for a long time, even if he had spent far too much time trying to deny it, trying to pretend to himself that he and Josef were just friends and would never be anything more.

He had always known deep within his heart that he loved Josef, that he wanted to be with this man. When he'd asked Josef to turn him back after the brief time he'd been human from using Coraline's compound, he had known somewhere in his soul that it wasn't because of Beth.

It had been for Josef. Everything that he'd done to preserve his life had been for Josef, so that he could someday tell this man how he felt, so that they would have eternity to share. It had always been Josef, even when he'd been with other people.

And now, here they were -- the morning after their first night together. It could have been a disaster; so many things could have gone wrong between them. They might not even have spent the night together, locked in an embrace, sleeping in each other's arms.

But none of that had happened. They'd made it through that first night, that first time together that could have been so awkward and hadn't been. And now, Josef was starting to wake up, those long lashes fluttering, those dark eyes opening to a new day.

Mick smiled down at the man he loved, not taking his eyes from Josef's face.

"Good morning," he said softly, bending down to brush a gentle kiss across Josef's lips. He wanted to ask his lover how he'd slept, but that seemed like a silly thing to do when it was more than obvious that he'd been awake for a while and watching Josef.

"Last night was amazing," Josef whispered, reaching out a hand to cup Mick's cheek. "Do you think we could do that again?" The look in his eyes left no room for doubt that their relationship was going to be a long and happy one, at least in the realm of the bedroom.

This was definitely the best morning after he could possibly have.
