Los Angeles, 1988

"How many Christmases have we known each other now?" Mick asked softly, standing with Josef at the window of his boyfriend's penthouse. The city lights were twinkling brightly beneath them, the stars in the velvety night sky overhead just as bright.

"Geez, I don't know .... more than thirty?" Josef guessed, laughing softly. "And we'll know each other for a lot more. Funny how we've known each other for so long, but it's only now that we're really spending our first Christmas together."

We could have spent more than this together if I hadn't been stupid," Mick said regretfully, sighing. "It makes me sick to think of all the time I've wasted when I knew all along in my heart that you were the only one for me. I should have listened to my heart years ago."

"I don't blame you for that," Josef murmured, leaning back against the broad expanse of Mick's chest. "You thought you were in love when you were just infatuated and obsessed. It happens to a lot of guys. It's happened to me before, too."

"It has?" Mick looked started at Josef's admission. "You've thought you were in love but were really just infatuated? Who was that with?" He felt an unreasoning jealousy at whoever it was that had obviously hurt Josef in the past, possibly even broken his heart.

"Greta Garbo." Josef laughed, shaking his head. "I really thought I was in love with her when we had our affair. But that passed pretty quickly. I was fond of her, but she was so self-absorbed. Not the kind of person I wanted to spend eternity with at all."

A wave of relief rushed over Mick, making him feel weak. He wrapped his arms around Josef's waist and pulled the other man against him, nuzzling his cheek against the softness of his boyfriend's hair. "I'm glad of that. I'd hate to have to fight her for your affections."

"You're jealous, aren't you?" Josef asked, sounding amused. He turned slightly in Mick's embrace to look at his lover, his lips quirking in a little half-smile. "There's no need to be. Like I said, it was just infatuation. I wasn't really in love with her. Not like I am with you."

"I was never really in love with Coraline, either," Mick admitted, his voice soft. "It was one of those 'fatal attraction' type things. I knew even when we were together that we shouldn't be. I just fooled myself into thinking that I had what I wanted."

"When what you really wanted was me," Josef finished for him, laying one hand on top of Mick's where they rested lightly at his waist. "I tried to point that out to you more than once, but you weren't ready to listen. I was getting frantic by the time she turned you."

"Frantic?" Mick asked, raising his brows. "You mean because I was human, and you didn't think you'd have much time with me?" He knew that was what Josef meant, but this was one of those rare times when his boyfriend was opening up emotionally, and he wanted to hear those words.

"Yeah, that was mostly it," Josef said with a sigh. "And I wanted to get you away from her before she turned you. I wanted to be the one who did that -- if you'd let me. I would have given you the choice, instead of forcing you the way she did."

"She did it to keep me chained to her," Mick said, his tone revealing the anger he still felt over what his ex-wife had done to him. "If I'd been given the choice, and had talked to some other vamps about it -- then I might have come around to the idea on my own."

"That's what I thought," Josef agreed, his voice quiet. "I wanted to give you the choice, let you make an informed decision about what you wanted. And if you had chosen not to be turned, then I'd have respected that. It would have hurt, but I wouldn't have force it on you."

"I know you wouldn't," Mick murmured, brushing his lips against his boyfriend's hair. "You're not like her, Josef. You might try to come off as being a tough guy -- and sometimes you even live up to that -- but you're a good person inside."

"If I wasn't, then I wouldn't be worthy of being with you," Josef said softly, resting his head against Mick's shoulder. He was leaning back into his boyfriend's embrace, so much so that Mick was almost completely supporting him.

"Hey, you're going to knock us both over if you lean back any more," Mick laughed, tightening his arms around Josef's slim waist, One hand moved up his boyfriend's chest, his thumb brushing back and forth over Josef's hardened nipple, hidden beneath the thin silk of his shirt.

Mick smiled as he felt the other man's nipple harden immediately under his touch and heard the sharp intake of Josef's breath. He loved that he could affect his lover like this; Josef's physical response to him was always so quick, so uncontained.

"I want to spend all day and night this Christmas making love to you," he whispered into Josef's ear, his breath warm against the other man's skin. "I want to take you over and over again, in every position we can possibly think of until we're both exhausted."

Josef laughed softly, turning his head to nip at Mick's lips. "Maybe I should get us a copy of the Gay Kama Sutra, if those are your plans for the holidays," he said mockingly, his tone only half-teasing. "I'm thinking that's something I should already have, anyway."

"You definitely should!" Mick told him with a laugh. "That's something no gay couple can do without." He was teasing, of course; he didn't care if they had a copy of that book or not. He didn't need a book to show him how to make love to the man in his arms.

"What do you want for Christmas, anyway?" Josef asked him, turning his head to nuzzle at Mick's throat. "Money's no object, y'know. You can ask me for anything, and I'll do my best to get it for you. I want you to have everything you want."

"I know you do, sweetheart," Mick murmured, bowing his head to capture Josef's lips with his own. "I don't need or want anything -- not when I've got you in my arms," he breathed against the softness of the other man's mouth. "I only want you. Nothing else is important."

"But you have me every day, all the time," Josef protested, shaking his head. "What's the use in asking for something you can already have any time?" A slight flush had come into his pale cheeks; Mick couldn't help smiling as he noticed it.

"You're blushing," he murmured, nibbling at Josef's earlobe. "You're actually blushing. You're embarrassed that I just said you're all I want." His tone lowered, becoming husky and seductive. "I meant that, you know. You're all I'll ever want -- or need."

"There has to be more that you want than just me," Josef objected, the blush intensifying. He didn't turn his head to meet Mick's gaze, making the other man smile even more broadly. "The only thing I know you want that I can't give you is your humanity back."

"I don't want it back now," Mick whispered, his lips brushing Josef's earlobe. "If I had that back, then I'd age and die -- and I couldn't spend eternity with you. All I ask of you is to try to keep out of trouble, so I'll have you around for all of that eternity."

"I'll try," Josef whispered back, his voice sounding choked. Mick could hardly believe that his lover was getting so emotional. He hadn't intended for this conversation to get so heavy, but maybe Christmas was a time for them to let those sorts of emotions out.

"Trouble always comes looking for me, y'know," Josef told him, a hint of laughter stealing into his tone. His boyfriend was obviously trying to lighten the moment, and Mick went along with that. Time enough later for them to delve more deeply into their emotions.

"Just try to keep away from it if you can, and I'll be happy," Mick told him, raising a hand to stroke his lover's hair. "Especially over the holidays, okay? I'd like for us to spend a nice quiet Christmas, just the two of us. Safe and happy, instead of looking over our shoulders."

"I think that can be arranged," Josef told him, his voice softening on the words. As their lips met again, Mick's only thought was that if he could spend the entire holiday season with this man in his arms, he'd have the best Christmas he'd could possibly imagine.
