The Evening

Ianto stared at Jack contemplatively, and with all the seriousness one could retain when utterly naked playing chess.

"So," he said, apparently having come to some sort of conclusion, "You can't die."

Jack, who was lounging feline-like on the floor next to the chessboard, nodded his head in ascension.

"You come from the future."

"That's right."

"Which means that at some point or another, you travelled through time."

"Yup."

"You were in love with an alien."

"I was." There was a slight pause. "Ianto, if you think that this is going to stop me from winning..."

Ianto smiled wanly, and proceeded to corner Jack's King.

"Check."

The Morning

As Ianto blearily opened his eyes, he realised that he couldn't remember ever being so comfortable. Which was strange, thinking about it, given the events of the previous night. The room he was in was dark, subterranean (Jack's, his mind supplied), and the bed soft. He took in his surroundings, seeing evidence of Jack's life, a book here, an alien device there - the life that was such a mystery to Ianto and the rest of the team.

There was a sound from the next room, water running. Ianto got out of bed sleepily and made his way over - only to be confronted with a completely nude Jack calmly brushing his teeth. His toothbrush was pink. Ianto couldn't help it: he started to laugh.

"Whaght?" said Jack, toothpaste dribbling down his chin. Ianto's laughs increased tenfold, and Jack was completely enraptured. He'd never heard Ianto laugh like this before. Hell, he had barely heard Ianto laugh at all. This was like a scientific discovery. Jack found that he rather liked it.

He spat out the toothpaste, washed out his mouth and waited patiently for Ianto's laughs to subside. Finally, Ianto managed to gain composure over himself, and had the grace to look a bit sheepish.

"I'm sorry, sir," he said, shrugging, "I've just never imagined you brushing your teeth before."

Jack raised an eyebrow.

"I'm sure there are lots of things you haven't imagined me doing."

Ianto gave him a glance that said 'not yet I haven't' and continued.

"What I mean is, I've always imagined you fighting aliens, time travelling, saving the world...I never realised you could be so human."

There was a silence. Jack's face was unreadable as he leaned against the doorframe, unashamedly naked.

"I can be very human, Ianto Jones," he said, walking towards the other man, "I can cry. I can laugh. I can hurt."

He placed his hand on Ianto's chest, sliding it upwards over Ianto's skin, his neck, his cheek, before entangling it in his hair. Ianto's eyes slid closed.

"I can love."
