"Jack?" Gwen's panicked voice cut through Jack's muggy brain, "Jack, are you ok?"

"Oh for God's sake, Gwen," Owen said, rolling his eyes, "All he did was pass out.
Pretty pathetic really."

"Oh, and you've never passed out in you life? What about that time–"

"Will you guys just quit it? Your bickering is really starting to get on my nerves."

"Starting to, sir? I thought it already did get on your nerves? Here's a whiskey," Ianto
said quietly, crouching down next to Jack.

"A whiskey?! He's just passed out, Ianto!" Gwen spluttered.

"Exactly. And, no offence, Gwen, I think I know how to handle this better than you,"

"What, just because you're his shag-on-the-side, you're suddenly a doctor now?"
Owen interrupted.

"Owen, will you just leave Ianto alone, and get on with your work?" Jack complained
irritably. Owen mooched back to his workstation and sat stony-faced in front of his
computer monitor.

"Anything I can do, Jack?" Gwen asked timidly. Jack shook his head, and she walked
back to her desk. Jack nimbly got off the floor after drinking his whiskey, and stood
next to Ianto.

"They're starting to get more frequent, aren't they, sir? The black-outs." Ianto studied
Jack's face, looking for a sign that he was scared. He didn't find it.

"Starting to, Ianto? I thought they already were frequent? At least two a day isn't
normal, Yan. Especially not for me," Jack looked down at Ianto, and tried to smile.
He looked back at the rest of the team, working away, oblivious to any problems.
Ianto slipped his hand into Jack's and was pleased to find it warm.

"But what does it mean? It can't just you being pathetic. I mean, if you can't die, why
should you keep passing out?"

Jack shook his head, "I don't know. Something's wrong. I don't know what and I
don't know why, but I'm going to find out. Come on."

Jack tugged Ianto to the Med Room, where Owen's equipment was laid out with neat
precision. He grabbed a syringe, unceremoniously stabbed at his elbow, and took a
sample of blood. Ianto swallowed and looked away. Jack examined the blood quickly,
then poured some out into a shallow dish and shoved it under a microscope.

"Nothing here… Looks like we'll have to do some closer examination."

"Sir, your arm's still bleeding. Don't you want to sort it out?"

"Oh, I'll deal with that later," Jack flippantly wiped at his elbow, and continued
looking around for the piece of equipment he needed.

"Sir, will you please deal with your arm now? I can't face seeing you bleed," Ianto
said pleadingly. Jack grabbed some material, and roughly wrapped it around his arm.
He secured it with a safety pin, and carried on fumbling through Owen's implements.
Ianto sighed, and realised that would be the most he got, "What are you looking for,
sir?"

"I don't know. Who knows what Owen's keeping in this pile of crap. And I really
don't want to send this sample off to a normal blood-testing centre. They're useless.
And God knows what they'd make of what they found."

"Get. Out." Hissed Owen through gritted teeth.

"Owen, he has every right to be in here," Ianto said reasonably. Owen didn't see this
as reasonable as Ianto. He got a blow to the jaw, and was sent sprawling on the
examination table. Owen pinned him down with one arm, and repeatedly punched him
in the stomach with the other.

"Right. That's it. No one punches Ianto," Jack ran over to Owen, grabbed the back of
his jacket, and threw him to the floor. Ianto lay coughing on the table while Jack
proceeded to give Owen a couple of black eyes, and kick him where it hurts. The
material around Jack's arm was soaked with blood by this time so, not seeing much
use in it, he pulled it off.

"Go home, Owen. And don't come back until you can be civilised," Jack spat at
Owen. He got up shakily and walked out of the Hub with his head hanging.

Jack rushed over to where Ianto lay, breathing heavily. Jack put a hand on his chest to
try and calm him. Finally, his breathing began to slow. He was still weak. He tried to
sit up, but Jack softly pushed him back down. Jack bent over Ianto, and gently kissed
him. Ianto gained energy bit by bit, and eventually he was strong enough to respond to
Jack's persistent kisses.
